Adelaide’s mystery monolith has disappeared as people probe who is behind the stunt

A strange monolith that appeared in Adelaide is gone and a group have claimed to be behind the bizarre stunt that has captivated the globe.

A mysterious monolith in an Adelaide paddock has disappeared in circumstances eerily similar to others found in locations around the globe.

The three sided, three-metre-tall structure covered in cryptic coordinates appeared at Noarlunga, next to the Seaford train bridge before it disappeared on Friday.

As of Sunday, all that remains are three metal posts.

And while Adelaide no longer appears to have its monolith, the mysterious identity of those behind the bizarre stunt may have been solved.

Despite some speculating it was the work of aliens or – a sculptor who died in 2011 – it appears to be the work of an artist collective.

The Most Famous Artist, a global collective based in New Mexico, has been linked to the monoliths following an Instagram post.

“Checking in … any collectors interested in an official alien monolith? Asking $45k. Includes documentation and signed TMFA,” the post reads alongside an image of a statue on a trolley.

On the website for the collective they offer three of the statues plus an artist proof, and the price includes delivery and installation.

There is also a photo of a man who appears to be polishing one of the statues.

However in an interview on Instagram the collective’s founder Matty Mo refused to outright say he or the group was responsible.

“I'm here to say: I didn’t do the monolith, but I didn’t not do the monolith.”

“I am both the originator and the guy who is just capitalising on it as a result of the artefacts that were created to seed the story which propagated the myth.”

He told Mashable he and his group were “well known for stunts of this nature” and promised “more on this in the coming days and weeks”.

It’s unclear if the collective is also responsible for the structures elsewhere.

Australia’s very own monolith appeared after the strange objects appeared across the United States and Europe.

A pilot spotted the shiny structure while flying in the Utah desert on November 18 before it also disappeared as suddenly as it had appeared.

The objects were also found in Romania, the Netherlands in California.
