‘Dumb blonde’: US Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin exposes horrible hate
A young woman considered one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time has revealed the barrage of hate she has received at this year’s Olympics.
Imagine being considered one of the greatest alpine skiers of all time at only 26 years old and people still have the audacity to label you a “failure”.
That’s exactly what American two-time Olympic gold medallist Mikaela Shiffrin has faced after a difficult time at the Beijing Winter Games.
Shiffrin missed a gate and failed to finish the slalom portion of the women’s combined event on Thursday.
She wasn’t alone with eight other skiers failing to finish their race amid Olympic-wide complaints about surfaces and skiing conditions.
She crashed and failed to finish her first two Olympic competitions, which are considered her best — the slalom and giant slalom. She was able to finish ninth in super-G and 18th in downhill, but clearly was not performing at her normal level.
Shiffrin missed out on making history, as one individual gold medal at Beijing would have given her the most career Olympic gold medals by any American alpine skier.
Having to accept her unexpected performance was made even worse by abuse from the public.
Shiffrin took to social media to share snippets of the horrible things people had said about her.
They included “dumb blonde”, “choker” and “disgrace”, and calls for her to retire.
“Dumb b**** can’t even do the one thing she is supposed to do right,” one said.
“Can’t wait for you to be done so we don’t have to see your failure loser face anymore,” said another.

Shiffrin used the post to inspire others to keep going despite the haters, and explained why she kept coming back.
“Get up because you can, because you like what you do when it’s not infested with the people who have so much apparent hate for you,” she wrote.
“Just get up. It’s not always easy, but it’s also not the end of the world to fail. Fail twice. Fail five times. At the Olympics (enter me …).
“Why do I keep coming back? Gosh knows it hurts more than it feels good lately. I come back because those first 9 turns today were spectacular, really heaven.
“That’s where I’m meant to be and I’m stubborn as s***. So let’s go for some team event training tomorrow, and then the final alpine race of this Olympics on Saturday.”
She received praise and support from famous athletes across the globe including many Olympians, and tennis stars Madison Keys and Sloane Stephens.
American gymnast Simone Biles, who has seven Olympic medals, commented on Shiffrin’s post saying she could relate.
Critics branded Biles “weak” and “a quitter” after she withdrew from the Tokyo Olympics last year to focus on her mental health.
This is the same woman who won multiple gold medals at the 2018 world championships in Doha while in agony from a kidney stone, and the same year won the US national championship with broken toes in both of her feet.
“I know this all too well,” Biles commented. “I’m sorry you’re experiencing this! people suck …. damned if you do damned if you don’t. but just remember how AMAZING you are, we’re all cheering for you, proud of you, love and support you! Go kick some ass saturday! But most importantly, embrace the moment. Have fun. love ya!!!!”
