The featherweight main card bout between America’s Shane Burgos and Brazilian fighter Edson Barboza ended in bizarre circumstances, stunning fans and commentators at UFC 262.

The pair dazzled spectators with an entertaining contest in Houston, exchanging a series of brutal leg kicks in the opening couple of rounds on Sunday AEST.

In the third term, Barboza left his opponent dazed with two straight punches to the head, but the American composed himself and the fight continued.

However, Burgos stumbled and dropped to the deck a few seconds later — seemingly suffering a rare case of delayed concussion.

UFC commentator Daniel Cormier said: “We’ve seen it all, but we’ve never seen that before. I’ve called a thousand fights!”

Even the two fighters were filmed laughing about the unprecedented incident after the fight.

Meanwhile, Brazilian phenom Charles Oliveira won the vacant lightweight title with a stunning second-round TKO victory over America’s Michael Chandler.

Earlier in the main card, rising star Beneil Dariush defeated American veteran Tony Ferguson in their highly-anticipated lightweight bout.

Ferguson showed his experience by expertly escaping a heel hook, but Dariush dominated the rest of the contest to secure his seventh-consecutive victory in the Octagon.

Speaking after the win, Dariush claimed he heard a “pop” during the heel hook: “He looked at me like nothing happened... he’s a zombie, no doubt about it.”

Meanwhile, the 37-year-old Ferguson suffered his third straight loss.

Sickening sound signals horror UFC injury

Some slick finishes to kick off UFC 262 got fight fans in the mood for the main course as the preliminary card saw a brutal knockout and a very nasty injury.

Charles Oliveira’s fight against Michael Chandler is the headliner and there’s plenty of interest in the co-main event between Tony Ferguson and Beneil Dariush too.

Christos Giagos started proceedings in Houston by choking out Sean Soriano before Priscila Cachoeira clobbered Gina Mazany to secure a second-round stoppage.

Jordan Wright delivered a savage blow, knocking out Jamie Pickett in the first round. Wright took the fight to the ground and unloaded with a series of powerful punches to the head before landing two painful knees as Pickett scrambled to his feet and tried to retreat.

But the man known as the “Beverly Hills Ninja” went for the kill, chasing his rival to the other side of the Octagon and collecting him with yet another terrifying knee that dropped Pickett to the canvas. Some vicious ground and pound gave the referee no choice but to jump in and wave the fight off after just 64 seconds to protect a defenceless Pickett from copping any further punishment.

Wright showed his respect after the demolition job, bowing towards his latest victim.

The final prelim fight ended with Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza breaking his arm while being submitted by an Andre Muniz armbar.

Horrified fans could hear the bone snap during the TV broadcast, leaving them with a sick feeling in their stomachs.

Amy Kaplan tweeted “holy moly!” while UFC star Tatiana Suarez wrote: “OMG I heard a snap. I feel sick.”

Commentator Joe Rogan said: “Oh my God he broke his arm.”

Laurie Horesh tweeted: “There’s a lot of iconic sounds of the sporting world. Leather on wood, pigskin on glove and so on. Jacare’s arm snapping is not one of them.”

It’s the first time ever 41-year-old grappling legend Souza has been submitted in his UFC career.
