Alexander Volkanovski couldn’t hide his emotions as he shook his head after he and his family revealed the gender of their child.

Alex Volkanovski's sad gender reveal reaction

Alexander Volkanovski couldn’t hide his emotions during a video posted to social media on Monday night.

The UFC featherweight champion uploaded a video to his personal Instagram account which started off showing a rather large balloon with the writing “Baby Volk #3 is a …”.

The gender reveal was a subdued event to what we’ve seen unfold across the globe in recent times with people taking the reveals to extreme and sometimes disastrous heights.

For Volkanovski and his wife Emma, the pair were waiting to find out if they’d be adding a boy to their family or if it would be a third daughter into the fold.

As the video begins Volk asks for predictions on what colour confetti will come out of the balloon with his oldest daughter Ariana guessing a boy while his youngest daughter Airlie goes with a girl.

Emma also guesses a girl before Alex says “I mean obviously we’re happy with whatever … but two girls and then a boy, makes sense right? Let’s see how we go.”

Moments before the balloon pop however Arianna flips her prediction and goes with a girl as she “saw some pink in the balloon”. It’s then that the UFC champ grinds his teeth together, making it evident he’s hoping for the confetti to be blue.

Things don’t go his way as the balloon is popped and pink confetti rains down onto the deck as his daughters celebrate.

The gender reveal comes on the heels of Volkanovski’s defeat to Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 in Perth.

Volkanovski’s shot at making UFC history by becoming the eighth double champion was lost as he fell via unanimous decision.

But many pundits believe the Aussie was robbed with a cheating scandal overshadowing the blockbuster showdown between the two champions.

UFC lightweight Dan Hooker accused Makhachev of illegally using an IV drip to rehydrate after cutting weight.

Makhachev denied the claims, but the scandal exploded thanks to a now deleted tweet from Egyptian MMA manager Ali Abdelaziz.

“For all those idiots out there, any fighter under the UFC banner can take 2-3 litres of IV as long as it’s done by a nurse or a professional, next week I’m gonna expose everybody. Islam Makhachev is the new Pound-For-Pound King,” he wrote.

Eugene Bareman, who has coached Volkanovski and former middleweight champion Israel Adesanysa, believes there is truth to Hooker’s allegations, although under UFC rules it’s prohibited to take on litres of fluid via an IV.

“We have reliable information to a point,” Bareman told The MMA Hour.

“I will half plead the fifth. Can you half plead the fifth? The information falls short because for several reasons, and one of them is that you can actually take an IV before a fight. It just has to be 100 ml of saline every 12 hours, in a 12-hour block.

“So what it has to come down to is whether you believe that people are going to take this saline, 100 ml, and then stop.

“And the fact that from that team there were two fighters from that same team and the information can’t reliably tell us yet which fighter illegally hydrated or whether they went over 100 ml.

“But I don’t know, no information can tell us without a doubt that someone in their team used an IV badge to rehydrate, which is not illegal if you used 100 ml. You’ve just got to ask yourself if it’s only 100 ml you’ve got to use for 12 hours, why would you even bother?”

Bareman said it would be difficult to prove if any improper use of an IV was done by Makhachev or his training partner Zubaira Tukhugov, who fought on the undercard of UFC 284.
