Dominic Thiem thrashes Alex de Minaur in US Open quarter-finals

Alex de Minaur’s US Open dream is over after being hammered in straight sets by Dominic Thiem, the favourite to win the grand slam.

Alex de Minaur was no match for Dominic Thiem.

Dominic Thiem has brushed off Aussie tennis star Alex de Minaur in straight sets to advance to the US Open semi-finals.

World No. 3 Thiem was on another level to his young opponent as he eased to a 6-1 6-2 6-4 win on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

With Novak Djokovic out of the tournament after being disqualified for hitting a lineswoman in the throat with a ball earlier this week, Thiem will like his chances of winning his maiden grand slam title after finishing runner-up in his three previous major finals.

In his first ever grand slam quarter-final, de Minaur struggled on serve all match and was never able to put Thiem under any pressure.

The 21-year-old Aussie showed plenty of his trademark fight — particularly in the third set when he bounced back from 1-3 down to 4-3 up — but it was too little, too late for the world No. 28.

Thiem held a lengthy game for 4-4 then broke quickly to make it 5-4 before keeping cool and serving out the match.

De Minaur can still hold his head high after exiting the tournament.

Dominic Thiem was a class above.

Despite the defeat, De Minaur didn’t lose any fans. Late in the third set British tennis writer George Bellshaw tweeted: “The athleticism on show in this match is phenomenal. Both so quick, such excellent movers around the court.”

Journalist Joe Krishnan said some of Thiem’s efforts were “absurd” while The Tennis Podcast’s official Twitter account called the Austrian’s level of play “rude”, it was that good.

Thiem will face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals after the Russian outclassed countryman Andrey Rublev in straight sets earlier on Thursday.

The other semi sees Alexander Zverev face Pablo Carreno Busta.

Djokovic’s default means we will have a debut major winner for the first time since Marin Cilic in 2014.

“There’s no Roger (Federer), Rafa (Nadal), Novak but there is Daniil, Sascha (Zverev) and Pablo now,” Thiem said. “They’re three amazing players.

“Every single one of us deserves this first major title, everybody will give it all. Once we step on the court, the other three are forgotten anyway.”
