Re-live all the action from day 3 at the Australian Open

SAM Stosur has crashed out of the Australian Open, giving up a 5-2 lead in the third set to lose to Jie Zheng. RE-LIVE ALL THE ACTION

Disaster strikes Stosur

SAM Stosur has crashed out of the Australian Open. We take you through that match and all the action from around Melbourne Park.

10.35pm AEDT - TIPSAREVIC THROUGH IN FIVE

And in the final result of the night, Janko Tipsarevic - the man who ousted Lleyton Hewitt in the first round - needed nearly four hours to get past Slovak Lukas Lacko.

Tipsarevic eventually won the match 6-3 6-4 3-6 4-6 7-5 and will next face in-form Frenchman Julien Benneteau.

10.27pm AEDT - DJOKOVIC ALL BUSINESS

Novak Djokovic eased into the third round with 6-1 6-2 6-3 win against America's Ryan Harrison.

The Serb was in complete control throughout the match, although Harrison did show a lot of heart and may even be responsible for shot of the match - a stunning crosscourt forehand pass on the run.

Djokovic's next opponent is a tricky one: No.31 seed Radek Stepanek, who progressed with a straight sets win over Feliciano Lopez.

8.36pm AEDT - VENUS SETS UP SHARAPOVA CLASH

Venus Williams rolled past Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 6-3 6-3 on Rod Laver Arena tonight to set up a third round blockbuster with Maria Sharapova.

Sharapova is in hot form and is yet to lose a game so far at Melbourne Park after picking up consecutive double bagels (a quadruple bagel?) in her first two rounds.

Asked immediately after her win if she knew her next opponent would be, Venus said with a smile: "Yeah, I'm playing Maria. I'd better bring my best game."

8pm AEDT - IVANOVIC AND FERRER THROUGH

A couple of big names were pushed this afternoon, with 13th seed Ana Ivanovic beating Yung Jan-Chan 7-5 1-6 6-4 and fourth seed David Ferrer needing four sets to down Tim Sm yczek of the US.

The Spaniard prevailed 6-0 7-5 4-6 6-3.

6.35pm AEDT - ANOTHER DOUBLE BAGEL FOR MARIA

While all the drama surrounding Sam Stosur was unfolding, Maria Sharapova cruised to second straight double-bagel victory, destroying Misaki Doi of Japan 6-0 6-0.

She handed out the same punishment to fellow Russian Olga Puchkova in the first round.

Sharapova next meets the winner of tonight's match between Venus Williams and Alize Cornet, which we will be holding a live chat for above - as well for Novak Djokovic's match with America's Ryan Harrison following that.

6.26pm AEDT - PUNTER'S FEEL PAIN OF STOSUR LOSS

SAM Stosur's shock loss to Jie Zheng was a wipe-out for punters.

"When Stosur led 5-2 in the third set there was over $396,000 traded on her at $1.02 or shorter,' Betfair's Daniel Bevan said.

Zheng reached a top price of $15 in live betting with TAB.

''Stosur started the game $1.20 with us and eased to her best price of $2.20 after losing the first set,'' TAB's Adam Hamilton said.

At that stage one TAB punter parted with $10,000 on her.

Serena Williams today firmed from $2 into $1.90 in tournament betting after it was confirmed she would be fit to play her second round match against Garbine Muguruza tomorrow.   - Nick Quinn

6pm AEDT - STOSUR CHOKES AGAIN

THERE is no escaping it - a shattered Sam Stosur choked at home again. She even said it herself.

The Australian was bundled out of the Australian Open after blowing it against Chinese player Jie Zheng on Rod Laver Arena this afternoon.

Stosur led 5-2 in the deciding third set and was two points from victory when everything fell apart.

Nerves took over and it was on display for the whole world to see.

Almost fittingly, Zheng claimed victory when Stosur double faulted on match point.

The grand slam winner got the staggers and Zheng bounced to win 6-4 1-6 7-5.

"Yeah, it was probably a bit of a choke," Stosur said.

"There was no negative feeling because I had been playing well, but yeah I got a little bit tight.

"(Zheng) always hangs in there and fights hard, but I probably gave her a little bit of help as well."

Stosur was in trouble early on and it showed as the heavy-hitting Chinese player took the first set 6-4.

She was staring at another early Australian Open exit before rallying strongly in the second set.

It took 42 minutes but she was able to level the match.

The match looked in the bag when she was able to skip to a 5-2 lead.

Then disaster struck.

Stosur said she was disappointed that she wasn't able to deliver on home soil once again.

"It's hard no matter where you're playing you want to be your best. And no I haven't been playing my best (here). I'll do what I always do and keep trying and keep training hard.

"I know the way I need to play to play my best."

5.14pm AEDT - YOUZHNY DONE IN FIVE

Russian 23rd seed Mikhail Youzhny beat Aussie Matthew Ebden in the first round but one match later he's gone, beaten in five sets by compatriate Evgeny Donskoy 3-6 7-6 6-2 3-6 6-3.

5.02pm AEDT - SERENA INJURY CLOUD DARKENS

Bad luck for the hundreds of fans who turns out to watch Serena Williams train today.

The US star missed her scheduled outdoor practice session and instead trained out of the public eye indoors as she bids to be fit to play on her injured ankle in tomorrow's second round.

Get the full update here.

4.48pm AEDT - FERRER WINS SEESAWING BATTLE

He might have won the first nine games of the match, but fourth seed David Ferrer got more than he bargained for in the remainder of his match against Tim Smyczek.

The American hit back to take the third set when it looked for a short time as though he may be headed for a triple donut.

But Ferrer found something extra in the fourth set to prevail 6-0 7-5 4-6 6-3.

French women's 11th seed Marion Bartoli is also through to the third round after beating Serbian qualifier Vesna Dolonc 7-5 6-0.

4.29pm AEDT - ICY POLE'S MELTDOWN

Classic Aussie Open meltdown outside today as Jerzy Janowicz loses the plot after a series of (he says) dodgy line calls.

Watch and enjoy.

3.02pm AEDT - BERDYCH OVERCOMES SLOW START

It took men's fifth seed Tomas Berdych 11 minutes to capture the first game against Guillaume Rufin but just two hours to finish off the rest as the big Czech won 6-2 6-2 6-4.

Berdych racked up 30 winners in the straight sets demolition as he continued his quest for a third consecutive year in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.

And you know what that means...Stosur's up next.

2.40pm AEDT - GOVORTSOVA NO MATCH FOR LI NA

Runner-up from 2011, Li Na, strolled into the third round with a 6-2 7-5 win over Olga Govortsova.

Na sprayed 30 unforced errors in an erratic performance, but still did enough to see off the Belarussian, who is yet to progress beyond the second round in six attempts at Melbourne Park

2.37pm AEDT

Not much value for punters who plonked themselves on Margaret Court Arena for the day.

First they would have seen No.5 seed Angelique Kerber beat the stuffing out of Lucie Hradecka 6-3 6-1, then watched Julia Goerges deal with Romina Oprandi 6-3 6-2 in just 1hr 4mins.

And now they're watching fourth seed David Ferrer give lucky (or unlucky) loser Tim Smyczek a lesson.

Ferrer won the first set 6-0 in just 25 minutes and now leads 2-0 in the second.

2.20pm AEDT

Sam Stosur won't be far away at this rate, with Tomas Berdych making mince meat of Frenchman Guillaume Rufin on Rod Laver Arena.

Berdych took a while to get going, but has since slugged his way to a 6-2 6-2 advantage.

2.04pm AEDT - BARTY/DELLACQUA FLY AUSSIE FLAG

It's been a lean tournament for the Australian contingent, but we've got something to crow about on day three, with teenager Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua dispatching Polona Hercog and Francesca Schiavone in the first round of the women's doubles.

The Aussie pair, who received a wildcard into the doubles event, flew out to a 3-0 lead in the first set and never looked back, winning it 6-2 before surviving a Hercog-Schiavone fightback in the second to take it 6-4.

Awaiting them in the next round is the No.3 seeded pairing of Maria Kirilenko and US doubles specialist Lisa Raymond.

1.32pm AEDT
Berdych vs Rufin 4-2
Li Na vs Govortsova 4-1

Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua may not have had much luck in the singles but they're proving to be a formidable doubles combination, taking the first set 6-2 in their first-round doubles match against Polona Hercog and Francesca Schiavone.

In the men's singles Sam Querrey will be breathing a sigh of relief after the 20th seed was given easy passage to the third round after Brian Baker retired from their all-American battle while leading 7-6 1-1.

And in news just in, Kei Nishikori did it easy in the end after a tight first set against Carlos Berlocq, winning 7-6 6-4 6-1.

1.25pm AEDT - WORLD NO.159 BEATS CIBULKOVA

Scream of the day goes to qualifier Valeria Savinykh, who has just secured the biggest win of her career with a 7-6 6-4 result over 15th seed Dominika Cibulkova.

Savinykh let one rip after Cibulkova netted the ball on the final two points of the match to hand the world No. 159 the win.

The 21-year-old had only ever played one grand slam match before this year's tournament - at last year's Australian Open, but that mattered little as collected a massive scalp.

Even better for the young Russian is that she'll face the unseeded Kirsten Klipkens in the third round on Friday.

1.09pm AEDT

Finally, some Aussies in action on day three!

Yes, it's on the doubles court, but we'll take whatever we can get as Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua go into battle against Polona Hercog and Francesca Schiavone.

The young Aussie pair have made a rollocking start, too, racing to a 3-0 lead in the first set.

12.57pm AEDT - ALMAGRO FIRST THROUGH FOR BLOKES

Simple stuff for No.10 seed Nicolas Almagro, who was way too good for Daniel Gimeno-Traver.

Gimeno-Traver put up some resistance in the first set but once Almagro won it 6-4 that was all she wrote, with the favourite rolling on to win 6-1 6-2.

Next up on Hisense Arena is 2011 runner-up Li Na, who takes on Belarussian Olga Govortsova.

12.38pm AEDT - RADWANSKA CRUISES INTO THIRD ROUND
Almagro vs Gimeno-Traver 6-4 6-1 4-0
Nishikori vs Berlocq 7-6 2-3

A botched between-the-legs shot wasn't enough to stop women's fourth seed Agnieska Radwanska from progressing through to the third round with a 6-3 6-3 win over Irina-Camelia Begu.

Radwanska made the audacious and flashy attempt - usually reserved only for the men - during the second set and while it didn't come off, she wasn't concerned.

"Today it didn't really work out, but next time maybe I'll try it again," she said in an on-court interview.

But let's be honest - all we really care about is that Sam Stosur's second-round match is now that little bit closer.

In what could become another surprise result, Russian qualifier Valeria Savinykh has taken the first set in a tiebreak against 15th seed Dominika Cibulkova.

12.23pm AEDT - KERBER THROUGH WITH EASE
Radwanska vs Begu 6-3 3-3
Nishikori vs Berlocq 7-6 0-0

Once again we see a women's singles match decided by an unforced error count that's almost off the charts.

Lucie Hradecka missed with ridiculous regularity against fifth seed Angelique Kerber, who simply got too many balls back for the Czech in the 6-3 6-1 drubbing.

Hradecka missed the mark 39 times, with exactly a third of the points ending that way.

Over on Hisense Arena, Nicolas Almagro has taken a stranglehold on his second-round match against Daniel Gimeno-Traver, racing to a 5-0 lead in the second set after taking the first 5-0.

And Kei Nishikori has kept the rabid Japanese TV contingent happy by taking the first set in a tiebreak against Carlos Berlocq.

12.02pm AEDT - FIRST SEED FALLS ON DAY THREE
Almagro vs Gimeno-Traver 6-4 1-0
Radwanska vs Begu 6-3 0-0
Nishikori vs Berlocq 5-5

There goes the first seed on day three of the Open, as Klara Zakopalova turns in a truly woeful performance to bow out 6-1 6-0 against Kirsten Flipkens.

The 23rd seed looked completely at sea and was all out of answers as she threw in 30 unforced errors - exactly double the number of her opponent.

On the men's side, Nicolas Almagro took the first set 6-4 against Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver, while top Japanese hope Kei Nishikori is locked at 5-5 in a tough battle with Argentine journeyman Carlos Berlocq.

11.37am AEDT
Radwanska vs Begu 4-1
Nishikori vs Berlocq 3-3

We could have our first upset of the day unfolding on court six, where 23rd seed Klara Zakopalova has been wiped 6-1 in the first set by Kirsten Flipkens.

Zakopalova couldn't find her range, handing 14 unforced errors to her opponent, while Flipkens kept hers to just eight while swatting 10 winners.

11.15am AEDT

The first matches are under way on day three Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens has raced to a 2-0 lead against 23rd seed Klara Zakopalova before most players have even finished their first game.

Over on Show Court 2, 15th seed Dominika Cibulkova has been broken in her first service game by Russian qualifier  Valeria Savinykh.

And fourth seed Agnieska Radwanska played a pretty ordinary game first up to drop serve to Irena-Camelia Begu.

10.30am AEDT

Good morning and welcome to day three from Melbourne Park.

Most Aussies still have a bit of a spring in their step today after Bernard Tomic's sizzling performance last night, and let's hope Sammy Stosur can continue that momentum later today on Rod Laver Arena when she takes on China's Jie Zheng.

Novak Djokovic, Venus Williams, David Ferrer, Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova are other big names in action today, so stay tuned as we keep you up to date with all the action as it happens.

FIVE OF THE BEST ON DAY 3:

Jie Zheng (Chn) v 9-Sam Stosur (Aus)
Stosur meets her conqueror from the Sydney International on Rod Laver Arena today. Will need a big step up from her shaky performance on the opening day to advance to the third round.

25-Venus Williams (USA) v Alize Cornet (Fra)
The American looked ominous in the first round. The new vegan diet has worked wonders for Venus. Look out, Alize.

1-Novak Djokovic (Ser) v Ryan Harrison (USA)
The world No.1 takes centre court tonight in the second match on Rod Laver Arena. Will he try and make a statement after the impressive showings by Roger Federer and Andy Murray yesterday? We think so.

Misaki Doi (Jpn) v 2-Maria Sharapova (Rus)
The Russian annihilated her first round opponent in 55 minutes without conceding a single game. Can she do it again today?

Feliciano Lopez (Esp) v 31-Radek Stepanek (Cze)
Expect a big crowd on Show Court 3 for this one. An entertaining contest between these two characters is all but certain. Don't miss.
