Goldrush Guru fires again at Morphettville Parks

Trainer Andrew Gluyas has unearthed a promising colt in Goldrush Guru, who notched back-to-back wins at Morphettville Parks on Saturday.

The three-year-old has plenty to learn, but is starting to piece it all together, proving too strong for his rivals in a Class 2 (1250m) with Caitlin Jones aboard.

The Listed Hill Smith Stakes (1800m) on October 12 looms as a likely landing spot for the son of American Pharoah, who is showing above-average ability.

“He’s got some ability, he’s very raw, he travelled well, he began well again today – Caitlin did a great job on him,” Gluyas said.

“That’s (Hill Smith) the original plan, I know there’s a couple of 1500-1600m (races) in 3YO company, we (could) line up for that, we’ll just think about which way we go to get there.

“I’d love to see him over a mile, we’ll just see where that is.”

Jones is building a successful partnership with the colt, and is excited by his future.

“I’m not gonna lie, I have not been so nervous for such a long time, I was nervous going into last start knowing this horse’s ability and what’s under the hood,” Jones said.

“Even again today, he’s still very, very unsure about himself out there, when he put them away he was so classy – there’s so much to be unveiled yet with this horse.

“It’s so lovely and rewarding to be given this ride, I’ve had a lot of time with this horse and got to know him well.

“It’s a very good group effort between the whole team and I’m just really pleased I’ve maintained the ride and been able to deliver twice now with him.”

Gumeracha Cracker got Gluyas off to a strong start on Saturday, recording a comfortable win under veteran hoop Jason Holder in the opener.

The next race saw stablemate Watchme Win charge home after missing the start by two lengths, finishing third behind winner Babayka, ridden by Victorian apprentice Tatum Bull. Trainer Paula Trenwith was delighted with the result.

“This horse is just so honest, I want to make a big shoutout to his owners, they are big supporters of my stable, they really deserve this, Rachel and Dave Cunningham, they are over in Bali at the moment,” Trenwith said.

Call Me Vexatious was the standout performance on Saturday, dominating his rivals to win by five and a half lengths for jockey Callan Murray in a BM68 over 2250m.

The Nicole Irwin-trained gelding finished second last Saturday at Morphettville behind Morryl Moral.

“We thought last week was a super run, we planned to back him up,” Irwin said.

“He’s come on really well from that, a few gears changes and we’re on the board.”

Three Victorian raiders notched wins on the nine-race card with Flamin’ Romans (Ciaron Maher), Struck Gold (Anthony and Sam Freedman) and Freak Of Nature (Jason Warren) all saluting.
