Monty Python fans could do a lot worse than backing Romani Ite Domum at Sandown on Wednesday.

Romani Ite Domum, Latin for “Romans go home”, is the central phrase of an iconic scene between actors John Cleese and Graham Chapman in the classic comedy Life Of Brian.

Romani Ite Domum’s owner, Hong Kong-based businessman David Price, had to adopt the Latin version as he had already used the name Romans Go Home on a gelding he had sent to Asia earlier this year.

Like Romans Go Home, Romani Ite Domum is a son of Ribchester that has impressed in his jumpouts.

However, Romani Ite Domum will make his debut for the Lindsay Park stable in Wednesday’s Tile Importer Plate (1300m) at Sandown instead of in Hong Kong.

Romani Ite Domum has had three jumpouts for a win and two seconds leading up to his first start, impressing co-trainer JD Hayes.

“He’s had three jumpouts and gone well in every one of them,” Hayes, who trains Romani Ite Domum with his brothers Will and Ben, said.

“He’s got really nice ability and I hope this rain sticks around too because he likes the sting out of the ground.”

Hayes said Romani It Domum had been a slightly slower developer than normal but the gelding should continue to improve with time and racing.

“This is the first preparation that he has been produced at the trials so he’s doing all this in his first prep and will be better with another six months under his belt,” he said.

Top jockey Blake Shinn will ride Romani Ite Domum at Sandown as part of a book of six rides at the midweek meeting.
