THE Courier-Mail’s racing editor Nathan Exelby looks for the Group 1 winners at Rosehill on Saturday.
Track: Soft (5); Weather: Mostly sunny, 23 degrees
RACE 4: RANVET STAKES
2000m, SWFA G1, 1.30pm (QLD time)
In the run: Looks a likely slow-run affair, unless something wants to make a staying test of it. Dibayani will try to control but can have company. Maybe Craig Williams goes forward on Kool Kompany, who sat closer last week.
Take note: Criterion wins on his best form, but turned in his least impressive effort for a long time first-up. Has the travel and tough racing caught up with him? Find out here.
Did you know: The United States has produced career-best ratings at both runs back this preparation. Futurity effort showed he’s ready for WFA and was just a sitting shot last week for lighter-weighted rival.
Early money: Dibayani $4.60 to $3.80 and in a battle with Hauraki for favouritism. Storm The Stars ($9) popular. Criterion ($5.25) easy.
Nathan’s tip: The United States $6
Nathan’s danger: Kool Kompany $18
RACE 6: ROSEHILL GUINEAS
2000m, 3YO G1, 2.50pm
In the run: Shards was effective leading over this trip in the spring, so should be prominent again. River Wild can be much closer at this trip. Montaigne will be far away and Jameka likely to roll forward.
Take note: The Randwick Guineas has provided six of the past 10 winners of this race. Montaigne worked home strongly without a lot of luck. Looks suited this trip. Trainer Anthony Cummings won with Dealer Principal in 2008.
Did you know: In last 30 years, Victoria Derby winners (Tarzino) have a 2/16 record in this, while Spring Champion victors (Vanbrugh) have 5/21. Both were excellent in the Australian Guineas and much better suited this trip. River Wild was also good at Flemington.
Early money: $2.80 was bet in placed about Tarzino. Le Romain has been $8 into $6.50 this week.
Nathan’s tip: Tarzino $2.60
Nathan’s danger: Montaigne $11
RACE 7: GOLDEN SLIPPER
1200m, 2YO G1, 3.30pm
In the run: Extreme Choice should find the fence easily and Kiss And Make Up can cross with him. Good Standing, French Fern, Scarlet Rain and Astern try to get in from wider out. Flying Artie, Capitalist box seat.
Take note: Calliope didn’t beat much, but posted a tidy time rating last week. Drawn wide, but double digit draws have won 14 of past 30 and seems to peaking at the right time. Value hope.
Did you know: One Blue Diamond winner (Sepoy) successful in past 26 years, but three of the past 10 winners ran in that race. Mick Price’s pair Extreme Choice and Flying Artie rate clearly superior on deeds to date.
Early money: Flying Artie backed to beat the stablemate. Kiss And Make Up ($8) and Capitalist ($9) in from double figures.
Nathan’s tip: Extreme Choice $3.20
Nathan’s danger: Flying Artie $4.80
RACE 8: THE GALAXY
1100m, Hcp G1, 4.10pm
In the run: Speed from everywhere and backmarkers should get their chance.
Take note: The Oakleigh Plate provided the winner of last week’s Newmarket and this would be regarded as weaker than that race, albeit boasting greater depth. Fell Swoop was good there, while Bounding didn’t have much luck. Both rate highly.
Did you know: 3yo’s have won 14 of the past 30 Galaxys, but only one of them was a filly (La Baraka, 1998). English tries to enhance their record here. Had trialled brilliantly and produced awesome splits to win well fresh. Tommy Berry has the task from the draw. From the same race, Shiraz and Boss Lane were both good.
Early money: The three favs the most popular. Terravista has been $8-$6.
Nathan’s tip: Fell Swoop $6
Nathan’s danger: English $4.40
