Golden Slipper 2016: Capitalist can step up to steal the famous dash for cash

TWO-time Golden Slipper-winning jockey Chris Munce is tipping Magic Millions hero Capitalist to bounce back in Saturday’s $3.5 million race at Rosehill.

TWO-time Golden Slipper-winning jockey Chris Munce is tipping Magic Millions hero Capitalist to bounce back in Saturday’s $3.5 million race at Rosehill.

Capitalist ended his unbeaten run when second at Randwick last start.

Munce was the beneficiary of Shane Dye dumping Prowl in preference to Laurie’s Lottery in 1998 after being beaten on Prowl seven days before the Slipper.

“Shane went the other way after Prowl was beaten as favourite in the Pago Pago,’’ Munce said. “I got the call-up and we drew the inside, had a perfect run and it couldn’t have worked out better.’’

Munce also won on Dance Hero, who had won three straight going into the Slipper.

“It’s not ideal to race below expectations going into a Slipper, but it can be done,” he said.

“I’m sure Capitalist can bounce back. He’s too good a horse not to. You would have liked to see more last time, but Peter Snowden is such an astute trainer, he would have pulled the pin if something was wrong.

“To me, that run is going to do him the world of good. He raced too aggressive early and was just way too fresh. I think you will see a different horse in the Slipper.”

Munce believes Capitalist is capable of upsetting the Mick Price Blue Diamond quinella juggernaut of Extreme Choice and Flying Artie.

“No doubt Extreme Choice is a very good horse and I know he’s won the Sydney way previously, but so often we see these Victorians come out of the Blue Diamond and fail in the Slipper,” Munce said.

“If you go through the history books, they have a terrible record and that’s why I think Capitalist can beat them.”

Munce is in a different corner to fellow dual Slipper winning Queenslander Glen Boss, who says Extreme Choice deserves to be clear top pick.

Munce is hoping to rekindle some of his former Slipper day glory when he saddles Wicked Intent and Lucky Black at Doomben.

“Both of them should run very well,” he said. “I decided to take on the older horses with Wicked Intent because you can’t just keep going around carrying 59-60kg every time like he was getting against his own age.

“He’s forward enough to win. We’ve had him around the stable so he didn’t get too fat while he was away from the races.’’

Of Lucky Black, Munce said: “He puts in every time.’’
