Melbourne Cup 2019: Revised final finishing order

A post-race protest against interference saw the finals places in the Melbourne Cup reshuffled. Find out the complete finishing order.

Melbourne Cup 2019: Vow and Declare wins by a nose

The Melbourne Cup has been run and won for another year as Vow And Declare came out on top.

The local hope pipped the field in a thrilling finish to the race that stops the nation.

A protest on behalf of Il Paradiso against Master Of Reality sparked high-drama soon after the race.

Master Of Reality crossed the line second but was ruled to have interfered with Il Paradiso. As a result, Prince Of Arran was promoted from third to second, Il Paradiso was promoted from fourth to third and Master Of Reality was relegated from second to fourth.

Here are the results from the main event at Flemington.

MELBOURNE CUP WINNER: Vow And Declare (23)

Jockey: Craig Williams, Trainer: Danny O’Brien

Williams: “I can’t do this without him (Vow And Declare). Look at him, he knows he won and again, I’m so grateful to be given the opportunity.”

Second

PRINCE OF ARRAN (12) — Jockey: Michael Walker, Trainer: Charlie Fellowes

Walker: “Charlie and the team have done a great job. I love the horse and I just wanted to win it, you know. I feel like I’ve let him down.”

Third

IL PARADISO (20) — Jockey: Wayne Lordan, Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Lordan: “Would’ve done with jumping a bit quicker. Didn’t get an ideal position but ran well.”

Fourth

MASTER OF REALITY (3) — Jockey: Frankie Dettori, Trainer: Joseph O’Brien

Dettori: “I want to cry.”

5th: SURPRISE BABY (18) — Jockey: Jordan Childs, Trainer: Paul Preusker

Childs: “He ran super. Just had nothing taking me into the race at the 800 (metre mark) but he’ll be back bigger and better next year.”

6th: MER DE GLACE (2) — Jockey: Damian Lane, Trainer: Hisashi Shimizu

Lane: “Massive. He wasn’t entitled to finish off like he did after the slow tempo. Finished well late.”

7th: FINCHE (11) — Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy, Trainer: Chris Waller

McEvoy: “He ran great. The pace wasn’t that strong. Would’ve like them to go a bit quicker. But we presented at the top of the lane and thought he was a real chance there at the 300m. He then just levelled out the last little bit. A brave run.”

8th: CROSS COUNTER (2) — Jockey: William Buick, Trainer: Hisashi Shimizu

Buick: “He ran a huge race. Slow away, missed then (his kick).”

9th: STEEL PRINCE (21) — Jockey: Brett Prebble, Trainer: Anthony Freedman

Prebble: “Ran super. They didn’t go a gallop. He was in a nice position but he wouldn’t switch the chewy off and it just took its toll late.”

10th: MAGIC WAND (15) — Jockey: Ryan Moore, Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Moore: “She had no luck. Got an early bump so we were back further than we wanted and they went too slow upfront.”

11th: TWILIGHT PAYMENT (10) — Jockey: Hugh Bowman, Trainer: Joseph O’Brien

Bowman: “He had a really smooth run in transit. Just didn’t have the sprint required to win a Melbourne Cup.”

12th: SOUND (17) — Jockey: James Winks, Trainer: Michael Moroney

Winks: “Tempo was ridiculous. He ran really well.”

13th: CONSTANTINOPLE (19) — Jockey: Joao Moreira, Trainers: David Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig

Moreira: “Disappointing, yes. He was going to have a super run.”

14th: MIRAGE DANCER (4) — Jockey: Ben Melham, Trainers: Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young

Melham: “He ran well. Probably didn’t quite see out the last part of the race.”

The race went down to the wire.

15th: HUNTING HORN (6) — Jockey: Seamie Heffernan, Trainer: Aidan O’Brien

Heffernan: “I needed to get cover and I couldn’t. The pace was too slow.”

16th: RAYMOND TUSK (13) — Jockey: Jamie Spencer, Trainer: Richard Hannon

Spencer: “Beautiful position but the race was too slow.”

17th: THE CHOSEN ONE (22) — Jockey: Tim Clark, Trainers: Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman

Clark: “He went alright. From that draw I had to get a long way back and the pace was no good for him. But he stayed on well.”

18th: LATROBE (7) — Jockey: James McDonald, Trainer: Joseph O’Brien

McDonald: “Just got back in a slowly run race. Hard to get into it.”

19th: SOUTHERN FRANCE (5) — Jockey: Mark Zahra, Trainers: Ciaron Maher and David Eustace

Zahra: “Had a tough run. Probably didn’t stay.”

20th: YOUNGSTAR (24) — Jockey: Tommy Berry, Trainer: Chris Waller

Berry: “Speed of the race didn’t help her.”

21st: NEUFBOSC (16) — Jockey: Luke Nolen, Trainers: David Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig

Nolen: “They went too steady for me. I went back from the gate. Next time.”

22nd: DOWNDRAFT (14) — Jockey: John Allen, Trainer: Joseph O’Brien

Allen: “Slowly run race mightn’t have suited him. Only I didn’t think that he ran out the trip.”

23rd: MUSTAJEER (8) — Jockey: Damien Oliver, Trainer: Kris Lees

Oliver: “They just went ridiculously slow and it didn’t suit my horse. Probably didn’t get a chance to run to his best.”

24th: ROSTROPOVICH (9) — Jockey: Dwayne Dunn, Trainers: David Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig

Dunn: “He hasn’t pulled up too well. He’s obviously sustained an injury somewhere in the run.”
