Melbourne Cup winner Robbie Dolan’s hilarious post-race interview
A former contestant on The Voice, Irish jockey Robbie Dolan gave a hilarious post-race interview after winning the Melbourne Cup.
Irishman Robbie Dolan has stolen the show after his sensational ride on Melbourne Cup winner Knight’s Choice on Tuesday.
An $81 outsider entering the race that still stops a nation, Dolan produced a perfect ride, storming home to pip Warp Speed on the line in a photo finish.

Trainers John Symons and Sheila Laxon — the latter claiming a second Cup victory after her first with Ethereal way back in 2001 — were ecstatic speaking right after the race.
Asked if he was confident going in, Symons told Channel 9: “Yes. We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t think we could (win it).
“What a great ride by Robbie, he stayed in, took the risk, went through the pack.
“I was worried, but great ride, what a thrill, what a thrill.
“You work with these horse 24/7 and you know where you’ve got them … top run, top five (finish) in a race like this you walk away happy. To win it is a dream come true.”
Symons joked that “everyone’s blown in from overseas” in reference to his friends and family that had flocked to Flemington for the chance to see Knight’s Choice’s shot at history.
Laxon was overjoyed with the effort of the five-year-old gelding from Queensland.
“What an amazing ride by Robbie, we always had faith. We didn’t have to give him many instructions, he knew what to do,” she said.
“I love that (the horse is) Australian, an Australian horse has done it.
“It’s the people’s cup and that’s what it’s all about. It takes a whole heap of people.”
When she was asked how she would celebrate, Laxon replied: “Quiet initially.
“When you win something like this it takes a bit of time to register.
“We’re just so thrilled.”
Then it was over to Dolan to have his say, a 28-year-old Irishman who is also a singer of note.
The County Kildare product moved to Australia with his family and now calls Queensland home, appearing on the 2022 version of singing contest The Voice.
He had three chairs turn around and joined Rita Ora’s team before bowing out in the sing-offs after making the top 24.
Dolan’s singing career was on his mind when he celebrated a famous Cup victory.
“I think I’ll be singing for the rest of my life after that. What the hell. Thank you so much,” he said in his thick Irish accent.
“I feel like I’m going to wake up any minute. Can you pinch me? Jesus Christ.”
It is Dolan’s first appearance in the famous race, but he said he didn’t feel like a rookie during the run at Flemington.
“I’ve never ridden in this race but I feel like I’ve ridden it 10 times as I’ve gone through it in my mind so many times,” he said.
“I know he’s got a good turn of foot. What a training performance. They were so confident in this horse.
“A lot of people doubted him and to be honest I didn’t, I really liked his race in Bendigo.
“I don’t even know what to say.
“I’m going to cry again. Jesus Christ. It’s incredible, I just can’t believe it.”
The Bendigo run he referenced was a fifth place behind Sea King in the Bendigo Cup on October 30.
Despite the photo finish, Dolan was confident he had got the job done on Tuesday.
“I knew I’d won but it felt like a lifetime sitting around to see the result,” he said.
“If he never wins another race it doesn’t matter. I don’t know where we’re going to end up (tonight).”
Knight’s Choice was intended to be a sprinter before taking out the two-mile endurance event and Dolan had one more wish after the race.
“Where’s me trophy?” he said to a roar of laughter. “I’d like to touch it.”
