Inside Mail: Deep Field a superstar in the making at Royal Randwick
THERE is no such thing as a certainty in racing but Deep Field comes close at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
THERE is no such thing as a certainty in racing but Deep Field comes close at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Deep Field has looked a superstar in the making winning his first three starts by huge margins and he is at prohibitive odds of $1.22 with TAB Fixed Odds to maintain his unbeaten record in the Listed $100,000 Lightning Handicap (1100m).
“That’s Black Caviar odds about Deep Field,’’ said TAB’s Matt Jenkins.
“The boom on Deep Field is extraordinary. In fact, Black Caviar only started shorter than $1.22 once in her first nine race starts.’’
Jenkins said the only horse to attract any worthwhile support to beat Deep Field is the talented That’s A Good Idea ($12 to $11).
TAB Fixed Odds is holding more money on That’s A Good Idea only because Deep Field is virtually unbackable for most punters.
Therefore, TAB has opened a favourite out market on the Lightning with That’s A Good Idea heading betting at $3.20.
“That’s A Good Idea is a classy sprinter but it is hard to see him beating Deep Field,’’ Jenkins said.
“But we believe he will beat the others and we have rated him at $3.20 in a favourite out market ahead of Wouldnt It Be Nice at $4.60 with Kencella and Shamalia both at $5.’’

TRIAL POINTERS
Tempt Me Not (race 1) raced handy then gained the lead over the concluding stages on her 733m heat at Randwick on Oct 3 to win by a length with her ears pricked. She is a neat, racy chestnut by a former smart and untapped galloper in Strategic Maneuver while her grand-dam is Tempest Morn who raced in 7 consecutive G1’s at 3 winning two of them and runner-up in four of the others. Looks a ready-made racehorse and debuts at home.
Avoid Lightning (race 8) has been tuned-up for her return with a sterling 1050m trial effort at Randwick on Oct 3 where she stretched out nicely over the final stages to cross the line a half-neck second behind Magical Stance who will resume at Newcastle later on Saturday and take a power of beating himself. Avoid Lightning is the highest rated horse racing in NSW this weekend and is 2 for 2 on slow and equally effective in the dead range.
PRICE CHECK
My Sabeel (race 8) has been in super form all spring. She won the Toy Show Quality back in August and has maintained that form with recent placings in the Sheraco Stakes and Golden Pendant. Back on her home track and gets preferred soft track conditions. I doubt $8 will be available on course.
WORK WHISPERS
Deep Field (race 5) sent out an ominous warning to his rivals with a dazzling piece of work at Rosehill last Tuesday morning. The son of Northern Meteor finished off his pacework with a final 600m in 37.00, his last 400m in 22.15 and an astonishing 10.76s final 200m. Facing his first acid test leaping from a midweek to a stakes race but has looked something special since day one.
Excess Knowledge (race 2) was somewhat disappointing when finishing midfield in the Shannon at his first run back. That said he was only beaten 4-lens and has looked sharp in his work since. The son of Fiorente’s sire, Monsun, strode over 1400m on Tuesday morning on the dirt covering the trip in 1:44 with an easy 41.5s for the last 600m.
THE LAST WORD
THE BEST BET
Kuro (race 4) is a promising three-year-old who continues to progress with each run. Scored successive wins on heavy tracks at Warwick Farm then tested at stakes level but was superb winning the Heritage Stakes by a comfortable margin and running very fast time. He has had a month between runs but his trial effort at Warwick Farm last Friday when third to Greco was outstanding. The soft track won’t bother him Saturday and he is set to keep his winning roll going.
EACH WAY
Rare Fragrance (race 7) is in a tough race but this mare is working her way back into good form. She has had two runs back from a spell and caught the eye in both, including her most recent outing when fifth to Entertains after she led into the straight. She tumbles 5.5kg Saturday, is effective on rain-affected tracks, and fitter for recent racing. Expect her to be ridden more conservatively and she will finish strongly. Good each way value at $10.
