‘This is ridiculous now’: Nick Kyrgios clips Dan Andrews

Nick Kyrgios has urged people to follow the health advice during this pandemic but Dan Andrews took things too far for his liking this weekend.

Regional Victoria to go into lockdown, further restrictions for Melbourne

Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios has taken a swipe at Daniel Andrews as the Victorian Premier came under criticism for his choice of words at a press conference on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Andrews warned of the need to stay home even though the weather forecast was good for Sunday.

“Sunday I think is going to be quite a nice day — yep, at home. At home. Otherwise, it’ll be lots of Sundays spent in hospital,” Mr Andrews said.

A clip of those comments was shared on Twitter by former Australian track and field star turned commentator David Culbert, who had a go at the Premier.

“A reminder of today’s public health advice. If you leave home = you will end up in hospital. Enjoy your Sunday,” Culbert wrote. “Cooked.”

Kyrgios also responded to the clip on social media on Sunday morning, writing: “This is ridiculous now.”

Comedian Dave Hughes added: “Bit much Dan.”

Kyrgios has enhanced his reputation during the pandemic by urging people to follow the health advice. He criticised many of his fellow tennis players — including Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev — when they were caught flouting the rules or breaching restrictions.

However, it appears Mr Andrews’ rhetoric on Saturday was a little too alarmist even for him.

Meanwhile, Victoria has recorded 65 new cases of locally-acquired Covid-19, amid fears of the impact this weekend’s anti-lockdown protests could have on the state.

We already knew of 16 of today’s cases, which were recorded yesterday morning in Shepparton via rapid antigen testing, and 55 are linked to current outbreaks while 10 remain under investigation.

With concerns over people delaying tests, growing exposure site lists and growth in the mystery cases, AMA vice president Stephen Parnis said “the trajectory is heading in the wrong direction” in Victoria.
