Kyly and Michael Clarke speak after news of divorce goes public

Both Michael and Kyly Clarke have briefly spoken to media after their divorce went public, their first comments since the divorce was revealed.

Michael and Kyly Clarke announce $40 million divorce

Kyly and Michael Clarke have quickly touched on the news breaking of the glamour pair's divorce earlier this week.

The pair confirmed on Wednesday night they are splitting up but will continue to co-parent their four-year-old daughter Kelsey Lee.

Kyly said she is doing fine after news broke this week of her upcoming divorce from former Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke.

Asked by Daily Mail Australia outside a gym in Bondi in Sydney’s eastern suburbs if she was coping OK, Kyly said: “Of course I am.”

She also said Kelsey Lee “is doing amazing” but added she “wanted privacy”.

“We said everything we wanted to say in our statement,” said Kyly, who was not wearing her wedding ring.

Clarke was spotted having drinks at Bondi bar Hotel Ravesis on Thursday with new colleague and rugby league legend Laurie Daley as news of his marriage breakdown made headlines across the country.

On Thursday afternoon Clarke announced his new job as co-host alongside Daley of Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast.

But on Friday morning, he quickly touched on the scene that followed him to meet up with his new workmate.

Host Dave Stanley then stitched up Daley.

"I've got to firstly say, L. Daley came in today, strutting around, now the paparazzi, first off, for a bloke who says 'nah mate, not my go', he comes in and I said 'gee, how was yesterday' and he said 'you wouldn't believe it, these blokes with cameras were following me around'," he said. "He thinks they're all following him and I said 'what about the clobber, did you get good kit?' and he goes 'I ironed my shirt'."

Clarke played along beautifully.

"He wouldn't let us go inside, I said to him 'there are 20 cameras staring at us in the middle of Bondi, let's go inside'. He said 'no Clarkey we're staying out here and embracing it'."

Daley added: "I've missed all that publicity Pup, I wanted to be around, I felt special yesterday."

"I'm sorry mate, it was absolute chaos yesterday, we probably couldn't have picked a worse day to go and celebrate. But it was a good day and nice to talk a few things over. Like I said, I'm really excited, Big Sports Breakfast has been an unbelievable show for a long period of time. I remember my old man years and years ago listened for the first time and hasn't turned it off since. It feels like I'm sort of getting back to where my old man took me as a young boy and to have the opportunity to talk about all sport is something I'm very excited by."

Clarke also admitted he was looking forward to sharing more of himself in the new role after being somewhat restricted by Cricket Australia during his career to not give away information to opposition teams and protecting the game, while he admitted "I probably didn't give the public and cricketing and sporting fans enough of exactly who I was and an insight into who I was as a person".

He said he was also looking to travel to the country and highlight more sports across the country.

The Australian reported Clarke and Kyly have been separated for the past five months and in a statement the couple said: “After living apart for some time, we have made the difficult decision to separate as a couple, amicably.

“With the greatest of respect for each other, we’ve come to the mutual conclusion that this is the best course for us to take while committed to the co-parenting of our daughter.”

The pair were married for nearly eight years.

Clarke has reportedly been living at his Bondi apartment for the past several months after moving out of his and Kyly’s $12 million Vaucluse home in Sydney’s east.

Just a week ago, Clarke uploaded a photo to Instagram of himself flying solo at the beachside pad — which has since been sold for just over $7 million.

Clarke and Kyly went to school together at Sydney’s Westfields Sports High but didn’t start dating until many years later, after Clarke’s engagement with Lara Worthington (nee Bingle) was broken off in 2010.

Writing about a chance encounter with Kyly in his 2016 book Michael Clarke: My Story, the 115-Test veteran said: “In 2007, before I began dating Lara, I introduced myself to Kyly at a bar in Cronulla. We reconnected over a drink, and as we left, I sent my best mate Steve Phillips to ask for her number.

“She declined, saying I could come and ask myself. Now I was so embarrassed, I decided to leave it to chance, hoping we would bump into each other at another stage.”

Fortunately for Clarke, fate came calling and after his and Worthington’s relationship ended, Kyly reached out to him on Twitter when he was on tour in the West Indies and the pair started dating soon after.

They got married in 2012 in front of family and close friends and welcomed Kelsey Lee into the world in 2015.
