Simpson has now told The Courier-Mail about how he has changed since he began dating McKeon. The couple first went public with their relationship in June 2022, showing they kept their relationship secret for more than two months.

Most recently the couple sent fans into a frenzy with “wedding” photos shared on Instagram, before fans had to pump the breaks when it became clear the photos were taken as they attended fellow Olympic champion Mack Horton’s wedding.

Simpson admitted last year he had a crush on McKeon, recognised as one of Australia’s greatest ever athletes with five gold medals, for some time before acting on his feelings.

That adoration still hasn’t changed, judging by how inspired he is by his partner after 18 months together.

“Emma is a huge part of my life, and has been such a positive influence on me in terms of keeping me grounded since we met,” he said.

“She is a really calming presence, she has really helped me, and she just impresses me so much, she is such a wonderful person.”

He said the 29-year-old has helped him as his focus on swimming has reached new heights this year heading into what will be his final year in the sport heading into the 2024 Paris Olympics.

He is still inspired by McKeon’s Tokyo Olympics heroics where she finished with four gold medals and three bronze medals.

McKeon also blew the world away at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham last year where she finished with a staggering six gold medals and one bronze.

“It was wild, and she just inspires me because, you know, I said to her (after Tokyo) a lot of other people who have done what you’ve done would act very differently about this,” he said.

“Her humility is so impressive, and it makes me want to be more like that – to be more like her.”

He went on to say: “There’s a level of understanding where there are things in swimming sometimes that are beyond explanation is great.

“We both come from strong, family foundations and swimming families. So there’s understanding there too, my parents, for example, don’t get mad if I can’t come to a family thing, because I have early training the next day. I feel like I’m just surrounded by this wonderful support system in my life, and what I want to achieve.”

The couple in April were rumoured to have purchased a $1.8 million Gold Coast mansion together. The property of course has a pool out the back.

The couple appear to have moved into the property and now call the Gold Coast suburb of Labrador home.

Simpson made headline-grabbing comments earlier this week when he said he will return to his music career in 2025.

Simpson has said all along that competing at the Paris Games was his goal.

He stunned the world in 2020 when he revealed he was putting his music career on hold to return to swimming, a sport he had excelled at as a child, including winning an Australian title as a 13-year-old.

Within five months of returning to training, he qualified for the Olympic trials in 2021, but didn’t make the team although remarkably, he did make the 100m butterfly final.

He has since competed on the world stage at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022 where he claimed gold and silver as part of the 4x100m freestyle and 4x100m medley relays after he swam heats for Australia.

“I’ve been doing this every day for over three years now,” Simpson wrote on Instagram. “There are only eight months left in my swimming journey which I believe calls for more content and updates on the path.

“Training is going well. I give whatever I have to give everyday. Learning a lot about myself. Loving feeling this healthy.”
