The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics has come under heavy fire after one act infuriated viewers around the world.

The ceremony unfolded over four long hours on Saturday (AEST) as the athletes were paraded down the River Seine.

Throughout the extravaganza, dancers and musicians performed along the banks and atop monuments around the area.

But as criticism over the river decision piled up, one act in the middle of it all sparked severe backlash.

After shifting away from the scenes on the river, the broadcast cameras panned out on a table of drag queens with one in the middle wearing some form of crown on her head and standing in front of DJ gear.

On first glance it appeared to be nothing out of the ordinary, but it quickly became evident the display was a recreation of Leonardo da Vinci’s mural of Jesus and his Twevle Apostles.

The scene quickly went viral with social media users far and wide unleashing over the decision to “insult” Catholics the world over.

One Catholic bishop slammed the proceedings, controversially asking about what would happen if the same level of innuendo was directed at the Muslim faith.

Robert Barron said Jesus was “mocked” by the scene and pointed out a large portion’s of France’s culture and commitment to democracy stemmed from Catholic ideals from centuries past.

“They felt the right thing to do was to mock the Christian faith,” he said.

“Would they ever have dared to mock Islam in a similar way? Would they ever dream to mock a scene from the Quran in such a public way?

“We all know the answer to that.

“What’s interesting here, is this deeply secularist, postmodern society knows who its enemy is. We Catholics should not be sheepish. We should resist and make our voices heard.”

AFL legend Corey McKernan also questioned the move. “What is amazing if the shoe was on the other foot … if there’s even a hint of being offensive - the carry on would be next level,” he tweeted.

“Imagine thinking of the concept at planning level - surely you’d think we may upset a few people?”

American podcaster Clint Russell wrote: “This is crazy. Opening your event by replacing Jesus and the disciples at the The Last Supper with men in drag. There are 2.4 billion Christians on earth and apparently the Olympics wanted to declare loudly to all of them, right out of the gate: NOT WELCOME.”

Author Matt Walsh added: “The Olympics opens by making a demonic mockery of the Christian faith.”

NFL star and devout Christian Harrison Butker shared a screenshot of the act to his Instagram and wrote: “This is crazy.”

Another viewer added: “Mockery of the Last Supper is wicked. Using children as pawns in a mockery of the Last Supper is absolutely vile.”

French politician Marion Marechal wrote on X: “To all the Christians of the world who are watching the Paris 2024 ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation.”

The scene however wasn’t finished with as it returned minutes later, this time with a man painted in blue and covered with only a string of flowers and fruits.

The man was said to be embodying the Greek God Dionysus, but viewers couldn’t help but think he was being served up as a dish for The Last Supper.

One social media onlooker wrote: “They are mocking Christians with that Last Supper! I assume the blue guy is supposed to represent baby Jesus.”

Organisers however said the performance was to make us aware, through a new humoristic and poetic song, of the absurdity of violence between human beings.

It was far from the only controversial moment to take place during the opening ceremony proceedings.

With a host of pre-recorded scenes, an apparent tribute to France’s renowned sexual proclivities that left viewers stunned.

A scene appeared to show the start of a saucy ménage à trois. The snippet showed three people canoodling in the France’s Bibliotheque National, or national library.

They even shut the door on viewers as it looked like they were about to do the deed.

The official Olympic Games X account shared an image of the trio with a quote from legendary author Victor Hugo: “The freedom to love is no less sacred than the freedom to think.”

Presenter Beth Fisher wrote: “Only the French could squeeze a threesome into an opening ceremony.”

With the Games now officially underway, fans are hopeful the action in the events delivers better results than that of the opening ceremony which has been branded as one of the worst in history.
