Raygun’s management team has stepped in to prevent a musical based on the Olympian going ahead, leading to a hilarious response from the comedian involved.

Steph Broadbridge was poised to debut Raygun the Musical at Sydney venue Kinselas on Saturday night before Rachael Gunn’s team took last-minute action.

The breakdancer, who shot to infamy over her performance as Raygun during the sport’s debut at this year’s Paris Olympics, has become the subject of countless memes, Halloween costumes and even Christmas decorations.

But a stage show that used a silhouette of Gunn’s famous kangaroos dance in the official poster and was billed as “a parody exploration of a breakdancer’s journey to the 2024 Paris Olympics” was a step too far for her team.

Gunn has lodged a number of trademark applications over her B-Girl name and dance moves and her team wrote in a statement the musical could “cause confusion among the public” that the production had the 37-year-old’s approval.

The situation brought a sensational response from stand-up comedian Broadbridge.

“Hi I’m comedian Steph Broadbridge, just hanging out in my casual daywear,” she began in an Instagram video you can see below, donning a cap and Aussie tracksuit top.

“My trial show tonight for Raygun the Musical has been cancelled.

“Raygun’s lawyers got in touch with the venue and threatened legal action so we will be refunding everyone their $10.

“Halo has trademarked my poster, which is flattering, I hope they do something fun with that.

“They were also worried that I was damaging her brand, which I would never do.

“She doesn’t need me to do that.”

Well played, Broadbridge.

Comedian's hilarious response to Rachael Gunn's legal action

The comedian went on to mock the fact she was being banned from busting out Gunn’s famous kangaroo dance during her act.

“They were very concerned that people would think that Rachael Gunn was affiliated with the musical, I want to assure everyone she will not be part of the show,” she continued.

“She’s very welcome to come, I would love for her to see it.

“They also said I wasn’t allowed to do the dance because she owns the kangaroo dance.

“That one did puzzle me, I mean that’s an Olympic level dance. How would I possibly be able to do that without any formal breakdancing training?

“Anyway to alleviate the concerns of Raygun’s lawyers, I will be changing the name of the character to Raygun with an I.

“So I hope that fixes everyone’s concerns.”

Management group Born Bred Talent, which began representing Gunn shortly after her Olympic performance went viral, said in a statement it was “committed to protecting her intellectual property and ensuring that her brand remains strong and respected”.

Gunn’s application to trademark the name “Raygun” has so far been unsuccessful, while she has reportedly had an application over a silhouette image of the kangaroo dance approved.

“While we have immense respect for the credible work and effort that has gone into the development of the show, we must take necessary steps to safeguard Rachael’s creative rights and the integrity of her work,” the statement continued.

“This action is not intended to diminish the contributions of others, but rather to ensure her brand is properly represented and protected in all future endeavours.”

On her Instagram post, Broadbridge cheekily stated she now had even more material for a revamped show, posting the caption: “Tonight’s show has been cancelled. But we will be back soon and with a whole new story arc to add.”

Her post has had 1150 likes and almost 200 comments to date, including a number from fellow comedians.

“Wait are you saying that a middle aged white woman who is a professional breakdance academic doesn’t have a sense of humour?” quipped David Rose.

“Imagine going through law school, passing the bar and ending up writing a letter saying someone can’t do a kangaroo dance,” offered Jacob Lingard.

“Raygun feeling threatened by someone with actual talent,” needled Aurelia St Clair.

“Sorry. There is something called a Ray Gun!!! Does she sue every James Bond movie ever? Also, I know of some people that may have been doing the “Kangaroo Dance” for a little bit before the Olympic Games … like 60,000 years before the Olympic Games!” added Dane Simpson.
