Australian stars in tears after shocking Olympics upset
Devastated Australian players couldn’t hide their emotions after being knocked out of the Olympics because of a huge boilover.
Australia’s women’s hockey team has been sensationally knocked out of the Olympics, suffering a shock 1-0 loss to world No. 9 India.
The Hockeyroos are ranked second in the world but couldn’t find an equaliser after conceding in the 22nd minute of their quarterfinal clash.
The Aussies were a gold medal contender and breezed through the group stage with five consecutive wins but faltered in its first knockout match.
They had a handful of penalty corners late in the fourth quarter as they searched desperately for a goal to keep their campaign alive, but couldn’t convert any of their golden opportunities as India’s goalkeeper and defence stood firm.
This was only the fifth time India has ever beaten Australia in women’s hockey in 42 meetings.
Former Hockeyroo Georgie Parker was devastated with the upset.
“This is huge for the sport of hockey, it really is. This is a huge occasion,” she said in commentary for Channel 7. “Only at their third Olympics, this Indian team, but you can see how much this is going to hurt the Australian team.
“This really hurts. This hurts for me as a supporter. This hurts these girls much more than would hurt me.
“It’s heartbreaking to see.
“They will be completely shocked with this.”
The goal against India was just the second time they have conceded all tournament and Australian players were visibly shattered at fulltime, as the team’s wait for a first Olympic medal since 2000 continues.
Aussie star Edwina Bone broke down in a post-match interview with Channel 7 when asked to say a few words about the team. She had to pause, turn away from the microphone and regain her composure before continuing the interview.
“I’m just really proud of them. It’s just such a shame to end it this way,” she said. “We’ve worked really hard. We’ve come together as a really united group under a really inspirational leader.
“It’s just a shame that it’s over.”
India, who didn’t win a game in Rio, only won two of its pool games and finished fourth in its group.
It’s the second Olympics in a row the Hockeyroos have fallen short of expectations, having also lost in the quarter-finals five years ago.
Former Hockeyroo Anna Flanagan tweeted: “Heartbreaking doesn’t cut it …. This team has been through so much in the last five years … we are so proud of you.”
