The Lions lost by four points to Collingwood, who won the nail biting AFL grand final 90-86 at the MCG on Saturday.
All eyes then turned to the Gold Coast women’s team to do the state proud.
Despite their greatest efforts, the Titans were beaten by the Newcastle Knights in a devastating 24-18 loss on Sunday.
And then the Brisbane Broncos were crushed at the last minute, with Penrith Panthers securing the 26-24 win.
Even the Brisbane Tigers failed to secure the win against Souths Sydney, losing 42-22 in the NRL State Championships on Sunday.
As the upset slowly set in, many Queenslanders will now be thinking how they came so close to being victorious across three codes.
Many fans took to social media to share their disappointment and theorise where it all went wrong.
