F1: Sebastian Vettel slams Ferrari strategy that ‘didn’t make any sense’

Sebastian Vettel has blasted Ferrari for ruining his latest race as the German’s season from hell copped another worrying blow.

An angry Sebastian Vettel has turned on Ferrari, criticising his team’s strategy on a dark day in Britain.

The German finished out of the points in 12th as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix at Silverstone ahead of Mercedes duo Lewis Hamilton (second) and Valtteri Bottas (third).

Vettel’s teammate Charles Leclerc was fourth, stretching his lead even further ahead of the four-time world champion in the drivers’ championship.

Vettel’s season from hell sees him languishing in 13th, while his young colleague is fourth. Ferrari has slipped to third in the constructors’ standings behind Red Bull and Mercedes.

Speaking after his most recent disastrous outing, Vettel said Ferrari’s strategy “didn’t make any sense”. He dropped to last after spinning at the start of the race then recovered to get within striking distance of the top 10, only for a pitstop to change tyres result in him rejoining the track in heavy traffic he couldn’t get past.

“It is in the gap that we didn’t like,” Vettel said on the team radio. “We spoke about it this morning.

“I’ll hang in there but you know that you messed up.”

Explaining his frustration after the race, Vettel told Sky Sports: “We spoke this morning that there’s no point pitting, knowing that we will run into traffic, and that’s exactly what we did.

“We went also on a hard tyre, which we then only had on for roughly 10 laps, probably not even that. So it didn’t make any sense.

“I mean, why would you put the hard for 10 laps and then put the medium for 20 laps? I was running out of tyres towards the end. So we spoke about exactly that. I guess not the best work we could have done today.”

Vettel can’t stop the rot at the moment.

Vettel also said his pace was disappointing, claiming there was no improvement from his 10th placed finish at the same track a week ago in the British GP.

“The pace was the same and that’s a question mark, but I can’t do much about it. I will have to try to keep doing my best and keep calm as much as possible, looking ahead to next week,” he said.

“We’ve been going through a very bad two weeks. I don’t know what happened in terms of pace. It’s a little weird. It’s certainly not the best day for me right now, it’s a bit frustrating.”

Ferrari has told Vettel he’s not wanted next season, the team signing Carlos Sainz to partner Leclerc in 2021, and it’s not yet known if the German will find a home elsewhere.

He finished 10th at the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix, retired in the next race and came sixth in Hungary before his two lacklustre efforts at Silverstone.

Ex-F1 star Jenson Button can’t pinpoint what’s going on with his former rival.

“I remember in 2010-2013 when I was competing against him, most of the time he didn’t put a foot wrong,” Button told Sky Sports.

“He was always there and could always get a lap out of the car. He just can’t do that at the moment.

“Normally I would say that Sebastian would get the maximum out of the car more often, but who knows right now.”
