WWE Super Show-Down rocks the MCG

Live: WWE Super Showdown

What a huge night of WWE action with the Super Show-Down living up to the hype.

WRESTLING fans packed out the normal home of football at the MCG and were witnesses to an incredible night of WWE action.

Some of the biggest names in the company delivered with Ronda Rousey taking complete control in her fight.

The main event saw two icons go head-to-head and a brutal contest saw both out on their feet with a surprise late twist leaving all in attendance stunned.

It was also a successful night for the Aussies with Buddy Murphy becoming the first Aussie to ever win a main roster title.

11.00pm

Triple H defeats The Undertaker

Two icons of the WWE put it all on the line for the last time ever in front of a packed MCG at the WWE Super Show-Down event.

One of the greatest rivalries in the history of the wrestling company saw the two goliaths throw everything they had at one another.

After a long and gruelling 28 minutes, it was Triple H who earned the win after pinning The Undertaker.

With Shawn Michaels standing in his corner outside of the ring, the man known as “The Game” got the better of “The Dead Man”.

The Undertaker had the entire crowd on the edge of their seats with his breathtaking entrance that saw the lights turned out around the G.

In a surprise late twist, the match was turned into a no disqualification match and despite it getting off to a slow start, the old school moves were out in full force.

The fight made it’s way outside of the ring and went deep into the crowd in the floor seats, but once it returned to the ring things turned ugly.

Chairs, tables and the famous sledgehammer all made an appearance with the latter delivering the final blow which sealed the victory.

After the fight was wrapped up, the four men all stood in the middle of the ring with their arms in the air as fireworks lit up the Melbourne sky.

But things weren’t over despite the final bell being rung.

Kane and The Undertaker caught the two men off guard and began a vicious assault which ended in The Brothers of Destruction driving Shawn Michaels through the announcer table.

As the duo began walking back towards the dressing room the music of The Undertaker began playing as Triple H and Michaels were left sprawled out.

10.50pm

‘Insane’: Rousey rocks Melbourne

It took a while for Rousey to enter the fight as the Bella twins continually refused to tag her in, but once she entered it was all one-way traffic.

After finally getting the tag, it didn’t take long for the former UFC champion to completely dominate proceedings.

With her teammates sprawled out on the ground outside of the ring, Rousey took matters into her own hands and single-handedly destroyed two opponents.

Using her MMA skills, Rousey locked in a double arm bar to earn the tap out and claim the win.

The commentators couldn’t quite believe what they were witnessing “I’ve never seen that,” one proclaimed.

“This is insane,” another added.

10.05pm

Shock result in underwhelming fight

The second last fight of the night was over in a little over two minutes and fans weren’t happy with the result.

Daniel Bryan and The Miz have had a long-running feud, but this time around fans only witnessed a tiny battle.

Whoever emerged victorious would earn a shot at the WWE title, and it was Bryan who claimed the win after a sneaky pinfall victory.

The result however was overshadowed by the fans’ displeasure with the battle that, if you had of blinked you would have missed.

9.55pm

The Shield win slugfest

Six of the biggest men on the WWE roster are in the ring and they didn’t fail to deliver a huge show for the fans.

The Shield, consisting of Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, walked out victorious after an all-out war.

Standing in their way was the man mountain Braun Strowman, Dolph Ziggler and Drew McIntyre. But one of the most dominant trios in WWE history proved too good.

Strowman took control of the fight and began cleaning house as he threw everyone out of the ring. As he stepped out to continue the brutality, he was caught by an out of nowhere spear from Reigns.

The huge hit sent Strowman into the crowd and allowed Ambrose to take advantage as he pinned Ziggler for the win.

9.20pm

Aussie claims championship title

Buddy Murphy emerged victorious from comfortably the fight of the night as he defeated Cedric Alexander.

The two cruiserweight’s put on a high-octane fight and the crowd ate up every single moment of the impressive duel.

Murphy, who hails from Berwick in Victoria, became the first Aussie to ever win a main roster title and did so in front of his home crowd.

His meteoric rise has seen him go from not even being on the show six months ago to now being the champion.

8.50pm

No DQ match delivering the goods

AJ Styles and Samoa Joe’s rivalry has been simmering away for weeks and the two men finally met in a no disqualification grudge match.

It didn’t take long for the sheer brutality of the contest to leave both men sprawled out on the canvas and after 15 minutes, the weapons started entering.

Samoa Joe brought a steel chair into the contest only for Styles to crack him on several occasions across the back.

The fight turned when Styles plunged Joe through a table which seemed to catch his left knee and ultimately brought about his undoing.

Styles locked in a calf lock and Joe could do nothing but tap out and means Styles retains his WWE Championship.

8.15pm

Aussie duo make big impact

Four years ago Peyton Royce and Billie Kay were just beginning their WWE journey and on Saturday night they took things to the big stage.

Taking on Asuka and Naomi, the duo emerged victorious in front of their home crowd after a tense back-and-forth fight.

8pm

Cena’s new look mocked mercilessly

Ahead of John Cena’s highly anticipated arrival, wrestling stars Elias and Kevin Owens sat in the ring and took turns potshotting their opponents along with the city of Melbourne.

Elias had the crowd rocking as he dropped a riff of AC/DC before claiming his opponents (Cena and Bobby Lashley) “are going down just like Collingwood did”.

Owens however clearly wasn’t happy with the venue for the event and slammed the city of Melbourne.

“‘We’re here in a cesspool of a city,” Owens said.

Cena’s grand entrance was unfortunately overshadowed and it wasn’t his lean physique that had people talking. No, it was the hair on his head which had fans in stitches.

7.30pm

‘Vicious early assault’

The daughter of WWE royalty Ric Flair, Charlotte Flair is looking to retain her Smackdown Women’s Championship from Becky Lynch.

But the fight got off to the worst possible start for Flair who was thrown from the ring onto the mat outside the ring in what was a hard fall.

One of the commentator’s proclaimed the opening moments of the fight were a “vicious early assault” as fans on social media worried about the impact of the fall.

The fight was brought to an end after Flair had Lynch locked in a figure-8 leg lock, but Lynch grabbed her championship belt and hit Flair with it. The move brought about a disqualification which means Lynch retains her belt.

As she began to walk back towards the dressing room Flair went after her which caused another scuffle to break out outside of the ring.

But it was Lynch who once again came out on top.

7.10pm

High-flying action underway

The action at the MCG is off and running with the first championship belt on the line.

Tag team duos The New Day had the target on their backs as Cesaro and Sheamus aimed to strip away their belt.

But the high-flying combo proved too good for their rivals and walked out the same way they walked in, with the belts in hand.

The opening fight of the night had fans split with some loving the high octane action, with others slamming it for being weak.

6pm

‘We dreamt of moments like this’

Aussie duo Peyton Royce and Billie Kay will team up in the second fight of the night and take on the dynamic duo of Asuka and Naomi.

Known as ‘The Ilconics’, the pair kicked off their wrestling career just down the road from the MCG only four-years ago.

Ahead of the huge fight in front of what the company hope will be a packed MCG, the duo spoke about the crazy feeling of fighting in front of their home crowd.

“This is the first time we’ve been in here, this is incredible,” Kay said.

“I’m sweaty, I’m anxious and I’m getting very overwhelmed right now.”

“Honestly it’s more than a dream come true. We dreamt of moments like this when we were kids and while we were chasing the dream, just merely five years ago and now we’re at the MCG … wow,” Royce added.

With their families in attendance to watch the biggest WWE event ever seen in Australia, the moment is incredibly overwhelming.

“Our family are our biggest supporters, they’ve always been the people we can turn to,” Kay said.

“It’s hard living so far away from them, we miss out on a lot of stuff.

“We miss out on birthdays and Christmases,” a choked up Kay added.

“We’ve sacrificed so much to be here and when we walk out there and they get to feel it with us, that’s what it’s all about.
