IN the current AFL climate Carlton fans would think their hopes of winning a championship at the Melbourne Cricket Ground would be highly unlikely.

But, the Blues will be represented in a title fight, come October 6 at WWE’s Super Show-down, in a unique way.

Home grown hero and diehard Carlton fan, Buddy Murphy will compete against WWE Cruiserweight Champion Cedric Alexander at the historic event.

The Australian has lived his whole life following the navy blue, and Blues star Marc Murphy was even his inspiration for his WWE ring name.

The Victorian born wrestler has been a revelation in recent months, on WWE’s third brand (behind RAW and Smackdown), 205 Live.

205 Live is a show purely dedicate to the companies high flying Cruiserweight wrestlers.

Murphy was not even on the show six months ago, but he took it upon himself to make the leap, after growing frustrated on the WWE developmental brand, NXT.

The wrestler simply hit the gym and the ground running, catapulting himself into the limelight, and becoming one of the stars of the fledgling program.

“I was obviously in NXT for a while and had some success, but then I found myself lurking in the shadows and not really doing much,” Murphy told News.com.au

“I took in upon myself to create an opportunity. I dropped about 25 pounds, I got an opportunity, I took it and now I’m trying to create a brand.

“I always watched 205 Live on the sidelines. It’s more my style, I like the quick and innovative moves. I just thought the brand was going to thrive and I wanted to be a part of it.

“I pitched the move (to WWE) and I kind of took it upon myself. When I first said it they said no, but I dropped the weight myself and gave them no excuse.”

Last time Murphy was at the Melbourne Cricket Ground was for a Carlton-Collingwood blockbuster.

He could walk into a similar cauldron like atmosphere come October 6, with around 70,000 expected to flock to the MCG to see the WWE Superstars. It’s the stuff of dream for the boy from Berwick.

“Getting the chance to wrestle in the middle of it (MCG), doing what I do, in my home city – that’s WrestleMania for me,” Murphy said. “It doesn’t get much better than that.”

Murphy keeps a close eye on the Blues’, waking up in the early hours of the morning each week to see them play.

While Murphy is dreaming of WWE gold at Super Show-Down, the Carlton fanatic feels the Blues can also be contending for titles in the near future.

“I actually have an app on my phone where I watch the games. Even if it’s 3am or 5.45am,” Murphy explained.

“We’ve shown some ability, it’s just sustaining that every week. Patrick Cripps is a gun, I can see him leading us back up there.”

WWE Super Show-Down is on October 6 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Tickets are still available from Ticketek. Or watch WWE Super-Showdown on the WWE Network.
