US Masters: Dustin Johnson makes history, Cameron Smith is Augusta's unluckiest player

Dustin Johnson made Masters history while Aussie Cameron Smith officially became the unluckiest player to step foot on Augusta.

Dustin Johnson has made history by winning the 2020 Masters, proving too good for Aussie Cameron Smith - who can count himself Augusta's unluckiest second-place getter.

Johnson finished five shots clear at the top of the leaderboard and became the first player to ever reach 20-under as he sizzled en route to earning a green jacket on Monday (AEDT).

The world No. 1 led by four strokes entering the final round before Smith closed the gap to two shots with a three-under front nine. But Johnson surged ahead on the back nine, three consecutive birdies at 13, 14 and 15 giving his rivals no chance at catching up.

Johnson's four-round total of 268 is the lowest 72-hole score in Masters history, edging out the 270 shot by Tiger Woods (1997) and Jordan Spieth (2015).

Smith finished at 15-under the tournament, signing off with a final round three-under 69. The Queenslander became the first player to ever shoot four rounds in the 60s at Augusta - but unfortunately it still wasn't enough for him to claim the top prize.

Smith's 15-under is also the best ever score by a player to finish second at the Masters.

"I find that absolutely amazing," one TV commentator said.

Smith finished level with South Korean Im Sung-jae, who also ended at 15-under after a final round 69.

Justin Thomas was three shots back in fourth, shooting 12-under, ahead of Rory McIlroy and Dylan Frittelli, who both shot 11-under for the tournament.

Johnson was overcome as his dream came true.

"I was nervous all day, I could feel it - the Masters to me is the biggest tournament, it's the one I wanted to win the most," Johnson said. "I could feel it all day.

"It still feels like a dream. As a kid you'd dream about winning the Masters, having Tiger put the green jacket on you.

"I'm here, what a great feeling it is and I couldn't be more excited

"To have the scoring record (at 20-under) ... is a great honour. I don't even know what to say, I'm so excited it's hard to even talk."

Johnson's brother Austin was his caddie for the week and teared up on the 18th green as the enormity of his sibling's achievement  sunk in.

"It's an unbelievable feeling to experience all this with my brother. He's been a big help being on my bag, I love having him on my bag ... it's incredible," Johnson said.

"He was tearing up and made me tear up.

"It was a lot of fun, I'll remember this for the rest of my life.

Meanwhile, Woods endured a horror show, shooting 10 on the par-three 12th hole as he plummeted out of contention. Five birdies from his final six holes was merely a consolation for the 2019 winner.

Among the other big names, Brooks Koepka was tied for seventh at 10-under, Jordan Spieth was well back in 46th after shooting one-over, Phil Mickelson carded three-over and pre-Masters favourite Bryson Dechambeau hit two-under, making him tied for 34th.

Smith signs off, Johnson makes it official

Aussie Cameron Smith closed out his week with a final round three-under 69, finishing at 15-under for the tournament.

The 27-year-old is the first player to ever shoot four rounds in the 60s at Augusta, but it still wasn't enough.

Dustin Johnson made the result official with par on the 18th, icing an incredible five-shot win.

No stopping DJ as No. 1 makes history

Dustin Johnson is storming home. A birdie on 15 made it three in a row and he has a five-shot lead with three holes remaining.

That made the American the first player in history to ever reach 20-under at The Masters.

Johnson maintains the rage, Smith stays alive

Dustin Johnson inched closer to his green jacket with another birdie on 14, establishing a five-shot buffer at the top of the leaderboard before Cam Smith hit back.

He was in serious trouble after his second shot at the par-5 15th but composed himself with an impressive approach, then nailed his putt for birdie to bring Johnson's margin back down to four.

DJ pulls ahead as Dechambeau looks to the future

Dustin Johnson extended his lead to four shots with a birdie on 13 as he surged to 18-under for the tournament.

Aussie Cam Smith and South Korea's Im Sung-jae were both tied for second at 14-under through 13 holes.

Meanwhile, big-hitter Bryson Dechambeau was one of the favourites at Augusta but finished nowhere near the front, a one-over final round putting him at two-under for the tournament.

"I'm going to go back home, relax, take some time off and try and get stronger again," he said.

Woods finishes on a high

Tiger Woods shot five birdies in his last six holes but his hot streak was merely a consolation after melting down with his spectacular 10 on the par-3 12th.

There was to be no repeat of his 2019 heroics when the American won at Augusta as Woods closed out his tournament with a fourth-round 76 to finish one-under.

Smith drops a shot on 11

Australia's Cameron Smith missed the green and then an eight-foot putt to salvage par to fall a further shot behind Dustin Johnson with eight holes to play.

Tiger Woods' Masters meltdown

Defending champion Tiger Woods made a nightmare 10, his worst score on any major hole, on the par-3 12th at Augusta National in the final round of the Masters.

The first double-digit major score by the 15-time major winner dropped him from 3-under to 4-over for the tournament.

Woods sent his first two shots into Rae’s Creek, the water in front of the tricky 155-yard layout in the heart of fabled Amen Corner.

He punched his third from a rescue area into a bunker, then blasted out of the sand only to roll the ball down a slope and back into the creek.

Woods finally chipped onto the the green with his eighth and two-putted to end the horror show.
Success at the 12th was one of the things that helped Woods capture his 15th major title and fifth green jacket a year ago.

Woods was bothered by back issues for the second day in a row, using his wedge to support his weight as he climbed out of the bunker behind the green after finishing his sand blasting.

Aussie closes on front nine

Top-ranked Dustin Johnson’s lead shrank from four strokes to two on the front nine in Sunday’s final round of the Masters as Australia’s Cameron Smith closed in.

Johnson birdied the par-4 third but back-to-back bogeys at the par-3 fourth and par-4 fifth, ending a run of 33 bogey-free holes, dropped him back.

The lanky American, 0-for-4 when leading majors after 54 holes, responded with six-foot birdie putts at the par-3 sixth and par-5 eighth and made the turn on 17-under.

Australia’s Smith meanwhile was second on 15-under after a birdie at the par-5 eighth. Smith had birdied the third and answered a bogey at the fifth with a birdie at the seventh.

South Korea’s Im Sung-jae, birdied the par-5 second and the third and climbed within a stroke of Johnson at one stage, but bogeys at the sixth and seventh answered by a birdie at the eighth left him third on 13-under.

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, chasing a green jacket to complete a career Grand Slam, made three birdies on the front nine but a bogey to begin the back nine dropped him to fifth on 10-under, one behind South African Dylan Frittelli and seven behind Johnson.
