Australian Jason Day agonisingly missed out on a second PGA Championship title as young gun Collin Morikawa stunned the golf world to win and claim a slice of history in the process.

Day carded a final-round 66 to finish 10-under and although he headed back to the clubhouse with a share of the lead, Morikawa stormed past him to finish at 13-under.

Day finished tied for fourth as Dustin Johnson and Paul Casey shot 11-under.

Morikawa won his first major title at age 23 as he held his nerve in a thrilling finish to the tournament in San Francisco, coming up clutch with a bogey-free 64 in the final round.

That makes the American the youngest player ever to shoot sub-65 round in the final round of a major win. ESPN reports Morikawa is also the third-youngest PGA championship winner in the stroke-play era, joining Rory McIlroy (2012) and Jack Nicklaus (1963).

An amazing eagle on the par-4 16th gave Morikawa the lead ahead of Casey and he held onto it for the final two holes. He hit the green off the tee with a monstrous drive that landed close to the pin, then made no mistake with his close-range putt.

American sportscaster Bruce Beck wrote on Twitter Morikawa’s drive was “one of the most memorable shots in recent history”.

The win was Morikawa’s third in just 27 professional starts, and came in his second appearance in a major.

Judging by today’s performance he’ll have to get used to holding trophies — a skill that needs some slight improving after the top fell off when he hoisted up his silverware.

The photos that captured Morikawa’s reaction to the trophy mishap were gold.

Morikawa had four birdies, including two in his first four holes as he got off to a hot start. But it was his eagle at No. 16 that separated him from the tight pack at the top of the leaderboard.

Brooks Koepka failed in his bid for a historic three peat. The two-time defending PGA champion got off to a woeful start with four bogeys on the front nine en route to a four-over 74.

Tiger Woods rebounded from a frustrating third round to shoot a 67 and finish one under for the tournament.

Woods struggled on the greens early in the tournament, but found his putting groove Sunday, needing just 21 putts in the fourth round.
