Vlatko Andonovski has stepped down from his role as the coach of the national USA women’s team following their World Cup defeat.

The USA entered the 2023 tournament as the top ranked nation in the world and were coming off back-to-back World Cup victories.

An official announcement on Andonovski resigning is set to confirmed in upcoming days, soccer outlet 90min first reported the news.

The decision comes after the USA struggled mightily throughout their World Cup campaign.

During the group stages the once mighty outfit only managed to secure one win and two draws, leaving them second in Group E and advancing into the knockout stages one point clear of Portugal.

Their tournament ended in the round of 16 when they were eliminated by Sweden in a penalty shootout that saw the final goal cross the goal line by 1mm.

It was the earliest the USA had ever been knocked out of a World Cup.

Andonovski took over as the head coach in October 2019 and finishes with an overall record of 51 wins, 5 draws and 9 losses.

Unfortunately under him they failed to win either major tournaments under him, claiming bronze at the Tokyo Olympics before their recent World Cup failure.

Through the two main tournaments they won only four out of 10 matches.

The knives came out for the team after they were sent packing with America turning on their own. Fans in America piled on the side which had been labelled “arrogant and unlikeable”.

The team was slammed for its celebratory reaction to the 0-0 draw against Portugal.

They were then savaged and seemingly outraged an entire state when an attempt to show its affinity for the city of Melbourne was ruined by the use of the term “Melby” on social media, a term no one has ever used and will now be etched in infamy.

Images of polarising star Megan Rapinoe laughing after missing her penalty created a stir while a commercial created by US World Cup hosts Fox Sports has since been doing the rounds on social media and it’s fair to say it has not aged well.

It starts with the line: “The whole world is wondering, what’s it going to take to stop this US team?”

The ad was re-posted on Twitter following the American’s loss with the caption: “Well isn’t this hilarious now?”

Noted American soccer analyst and ex-national team player Alexi Lalas also did not hold back in his assessment of the current women’s team.

“Don’t kill the messenger. This #USWNT is polarizing,” Lalas wrote. “Politics, causes, stances, & behavior have made this team unlikeable to a portion of America.

“This team has built its brand and has derived its power from being the best/winning. If that goes away they risk becoming irrelevant.”
