Oh Team USA, what have you done.

In a single social media post the world number one women’s soccer team infuriated the entire city of Melbourne.

A move that doesn’t bode well for the two-time defending champions ahead of their first World Cup clash on Australian soil which sees them take on Sweden on Sunday evening at Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium.

On Friday night the official US Womens National Team social media account uploaded a photo of the players going through training under the lights.

While the photo was perfectly fine, it was the caption that left Melbourne locals seeing red and putting the team on blast.

“Under the lights in Melby,” the caption read.

The butchering of Aussie slang didn’t go unnoticed with fans far and wide calling them out for calling the city a term no Melburnian has ever used.

AAP’s Anna Harrington wrote: “Melby?! Sweden should go through on default.”

Journalist Leonardo Puglisi wrote: “Calling Melbourne ‘Melby’ should lead to immediate prison time.”

Journalist Mark Gottlieb wrote: “This is an international incident. Far worse than the Bairstow stumping … next thing Albo and Biden are gonna be firing lame burns on each other.”

ESPN’s Laurie Horesh wrote: “Torn between: Anger at the USWNT’s total grossness of plucking a name no one has ever used for Melbourne outta god knows where. And now having another way to tease Melburnians when they turn on their anti-Sydney little brother microphone.”

Team USA have been under continual attack throughout the World Cup with their own country turning on them over their actions.

During their opening clash a large portion of the playing squad remained silent during the playing of the national anthem.

Then after their final group stage clash they were criticised for acting like they’d won the entire tournament despite only claiming a 0-0 draw that just saw them edge through into the knockout stage.

Veteran presenter Megyn Kelly launched a scathing attack on the team, labelling them “morons” for their lack of patriotism and taking aim at star Megan Rapinoe.

Team USA will take on Sweden on Sunday, August 6 at 7pm (AEST).
