Mary Fowler scores ‘wonder goal’ for Man City after Matildas teammate’s exit

Mary Fowler is back in action for Manchester City and she’s produced more fireworks after her Matildas teammate left the club this week.

Mary Fowler has done it again.

The Matildas star has produced a wonder goal to help her club side Manchester City claim a 4-2 victory over Aston Villa in the Women’s Super League overnight on Saturday.

After Aston Villa scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute, City hit back through Vivianne Miedema, who scored a first half double.

Miedema scored an absolute worldie from outside the box, before Fowler channelled her teammate to score her own goal of the season contender in the 54th minute.

Dribbling the ball to the corner of the 18-yard box, Fowler cut back inside on to her favoured left foot and unleashed a curling shot that flew over the outstretched hands of Aston Villa goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo.

“Wow, how about that,” the commentator said. “Another wonder goal for City, and they’ve got their lead back.”

Fowler was mobbed by her teammates as they celebrated the long range strike that has become customary for the 21-year-old Australian.

Last month, Fowler used her left boot to score a rocket of goal for Man City, and her side might need a few more of those if they are to reel in their main rival, Sam Kerr’s Chelsea.

Manchester City are six points behind league leaders Chelsea, who take on Arsenal on Sunday night.

Fowler’s City are striving to win a trophy this season and are still alive in the women’s UEFA Champions League, the League Cup and the FA Cup.

Nathan Cleary and Mary Fowler's loved up holiday

The talented forward returned to action with Manchester City last week after taking some time away from football over the past month during the mid-season break.

Fowler opted out of selection for four Matildas friendlies against Brazil and Chinese Tapei late last year as she took time out to mentally recover.

She also spent time in the UK and Australia with boyfriend Nathan Cleary as the sporting power couple found time to relax on holiday during their busy schedules.

Cleary said his batteries were recharged after a trip to north Queensland and the Whitsundays with Fowler.

This week Matildas central defender Alanna Kennedy announced she was leaving Manchester City to join Angel City FC, in America’s NWSL team co-owned by Natalie Portman.

The move was announced on the same day Manchester City wished Kennedy happy birthday on their social media channels.

“I am really excited to join Angel City and return to the NWSL,” Kennedy said.

“I was inspired by the club’s mission and purpose and I am looking forward to arriving in LA and meeting all my teammates. Equally, I am excited to get to work and contribute to the team’s success on the field.”

“Alanna is an experienced defender who brings both leadership and a winning mentality to our team, said ACFC Sporting Director Mark Parsons. “Her international experience with Australia, coupled with her ability to play in multiple defensive positions, makes her a versatile addition to our roster. We look forward to seeing her contribute to the culture and success of Angel City.”

Kennedy’s departure leaves Fowler as the sole Australian at Man City.

Sam Kerr plays for Chelsea, Matildas trio Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross play for Arsenal, while Charli Grant and Hayley Raso play for Tottenham.
