A shocking list of all the cyclists who were injured during the opening stage of the Tour de France has emerged as the full extent of one fan’s actions becomes clear.

A spectator holding a sign saying hello to her grandparents caused carnage when she ventured onto the track, oblivious to the oncoming peloton.

She was looking in the other direction at the motorbike TV cameras and didn’t notice the stack of riders coming her way. German rider Tony Martin brushed past the woman and was knocked off balance by her sign, falling and sparking a horrifying domino effect that ended in a tangle of bikes and bodies.

The frightening scenes were described by some as “the worst Tour de France crash ever seen”, as riders lay strewn across the ground and the race came to a halt for five minutes.

But there was more damage to come. A second mass pile-up occurred just 8km short of the finish line and injured more riders on a wild opening day of this year’s event.

Cycling News released a list of all those who had been hurt — as the total reached 26.

Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome was caught up in the second mess and four other riders were forced to withdraw from the Tour because their injuries were so bad: Germany’s Jasha Sutterlin (DSM), Marc Soler of Spain (Movistar), French rider Cyril Lemoine (BB Hotels) and Lithuania’s Ignatas Konovalovas (Groupama-FDJ).

As reported by Cycling News, Lemoine suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung, Sutterlin suffered a bad head injury and Soler fractured his wrists.

Among the other victims, Ben O’Connor required 10 stitches on his forearm, Marc Hirschi dislocated his shoulder Kristian Sbaragli required stitches on his lower lip.

After the day’s racing Froome told his social media followers he was off for scans, and updated them on his condition on Sunday morning.

“No fractures thankfully but there’s a lot of swelling & bruising to my left leg and thorax,” Froome tweeted. “I’m going to try get a good night’s rest & see how things look in the morning before making any decisions with the medical team.”

Froome’s Swiss teammate Reto Hollenstein also required a visit to hospital for a scan.

“Further checkups at the hospital have ruled out any fractures for @RetoHollenstein and @chrisfroome after their crashes today,” said a team statement.

“They will be monitored by the team’s medical staff overnight. Another update will be given tomorrow morning.”

Froome is racing the Tour de France for the first time since suffering multiple injuries when crashing into a wall at high speed in May 2019.

The stage was eventually won by Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe, who dusted himself off from a fall to claim the first yellow jersey of the Tour de France.

“I was in a great position at the bottom of the last hill, and I accelerated to drop all the sprinters who wanted to win, and then see who was left,” Alaphilippe explained.

“We had been planning it and I’ve been thinking about it since we got to Brittany.”

Alaphilippe added: “We are all happy to see fans back on the roadside, but I call on fans to be more careful.”
