The Brisbane Heat are expected to announce their big name coach

The Australian Big Bash competition is set to land arguably its biggest coaching name after growing whispers turned to the real deal.

Darren Lehmann will soon be back calling the shots.

Former Australian coach Darren Lehmann has been announced as the new Brisbane Heat mentor after rumours swirled around the 49-year-old’s cricketing future this week.

The Big Bash role will be his first coaching appointment since the ball tampering scandal in South Africa last year.

Lehmann ultimately resigned over the incident after players David Warner, Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft were also suspended.

But he continued to work developing talent with the national performance squad and other pathways programs at CA before taking on a number of media roles.

Lehmann was probed on Macquarie Sports Radio last Friday after whispers of him chatting to multiple clubs in the T20 competition surfaced.

“I’m catching up with a few people and seeing what comes from it,” he said.

Hosts Mark Allen and David Schwarz pestered for details with Lehmann hinting he’d chatted to clubs in Melbourne, as well as his former club the Brisbane Heat.

“I’ve chatted to a few people and seeing the lay of the land, really,” Lehmann said.

“I love coaching and I love working on radio so you get the best of both worlds in the BBL if you manage to land one of those jobs.

“I’ll just see what happens in the next couple of weeks.”

The Courier Mail’s Robert Craddock first reported that Lehmann edged Queensland Bulls coach Wade Seccombe for the role with former Heat batsman Brendon McCullum and international all-rounder James Hopes also applying.

Brisbane-based Lehmann had previously coached the Heat to their only title.
