Former Aussie head coach Darren Lehmann is gunning for a coaching return after the ball tampering scandal in 2018 cost him his job.

The former Test batsman, while having no part in “sandpapergate”, announced he’d be stepping down from his role immediately after the Cape Town firestorm erupted.

Now, almost a year later, the 49-year-old has revealed he’s aiming to crack back into cricket with a role in the Big Bash.

Lehmann was probed on Macquarie Sports Radio on Friday after whispers of him chatting to multiple clubs in the T20 competition surfaced.

“I’m catching up with a few people and seeing what comes from it,” he said.

Hosts Mark Allen and David Schwarz pestered for details with Lehmann hinting he’d chatted to clubs in Melbourne, as well as his former club the Brisbane Heat.

“I’ve chatted to a few people and seeing the lay of the land, really,” Lehmann said.

“I love coaching and I love working on radio so you get the best of both worlds in the BBL if you manage to land one of those jobs.

“I’ll just see what happens in the next couple of weeks.”

Courier Mail cricket journalist Robert Craddock revealed Lehmann was up against stiff competition should he commit to landing the Heat’s top job.

“The others are believed to be Queensland Bulls coach Wade Seccombe, Kiwi Brendon McCullum, and experienced former Aussie all-rounder James Hopes who is an assistant coach with the Heat,” Craddock wrote.

Lehmann’s reveal came after he weighed in on Australia’s Usman Khawaja debacle ahead of the Ashes.

“If I’m fair dinkum about batting him three in the Ashes, I don’t think you can take him to the one day series against India and Pakistan,” Lehmann said in February.

“I think he’s got to play the four Shield games at the back end with the Dukes ball and get some form, and it’s one for the selectors to mull over.”

Khawaja’s former coach suggested his dismissal was “lazy” and out of character for a player who has scored seven Test centuries.

“The way he got out, was very unlike Usman Khawaja, it was a lazy shot. He’s not like that, he’s a better player than that,” Lehmann said.
