Sheffield Shield wrap: Tasmania’s capitulation and unknown teenager’s memorable debut
After they were rolled for 78 on Friday, the Tasmanian tigers have made Sheffield Shield history with another embarrassing collapse.
Just when you thought Tasmania’s batting couldn’t sink any lower, the Tigers made Sheffield Shield history on Saturday, losing their opening three wickets without scoring a run.
Less than 24 hours earlier, Tasmania were bowled out for just 78 on a horror opening day of their clash with Queensland in Brisbane. It was their third-lowest team total in the 128-year history of Sheffield Shield cricket.
Charlie Wakim top scored with 11, and was the only visiting batsman to reach double figures in a woeful batting display at the Gabba.

Queensland responded by making 257, taking a first innings lead of 179 runs, former Australian batsman Usman Khawaja top scoring with 56.
Before Tasmania could even make a dent in the first innings deficit, Queensland’s pacemen removed both opening batsmen and No. 4 Jake Doran, each for a duck.
It was the first time in history the Tigers lost three wickets without scoring to start an innings, the sixth such occurrence of any Sheffield Shield side.
Tasmania 3-0 in their 2nd innings against Queensland is the sixth time in #SheffieldShield history a team has been 3-0.

Doran and Jordan Silk were both trapped LBW by Michael Neser, while former Test batsman Alex Doolan edged to Australian opener Joe Burns at slip.
However, Wakim and Ben McDermott revived the innings, combining for a 72-run fourth wicket partnership.
Batting collapses have become a regular occurrence for Tasmania, who have only registered one victory this season and sit at fifth on the Sheffield Shield ladder.
UNKNOWN TEENAGER’S IMPRESSIVE DEBUT
Teenager Wil Parker made his first class debut in Sydney this week, becoming the fourth youngest cricketer to represent Victoria in Sheffield Shield history.
The 17-year-old spin bowler repaid the selectors’ faith, snaring two key wickets late on day two to put Victoria in control at the SCG.
Former Test cricketers Kurtis Patterson and Moises Henriques both fell to Parker’s bowling, who finished the day with figures of 2/29 from 11 economic overs.
Always great to see a young leggie arrive on the scene ... nice glovework from Gotch too ... https://t.co/eAyshhGniJ

Parker has also been touted as a future AFL prodigy. He is currently juggling Year 12 studies, Premier Cricket with the Monash Tigers and training sessions with NAB League side Eastern Ranges, as first reported by foxsports.com.au.
Victoria declared their first innings on 7/431, with Seb Gotch registering his maiden Sheffield Shield century. The Blues are 4/201 at stumps on day two, still trailing by 230 runs.
New South Wales are undefeated in the 2019/20 season, while Victoria are still searching for the first win since last year’s Sheffield Shield final.
