Justin Langer: Cameron Green will play first Test vs India if fit
The most exciting prospect in Australian cricket will wear the baggy green for the first time this week, as long as he overcomes one hurdle.
Australia coach Justin Langer has confirmed young gun Cameron Green will make his Test debut against India on Thursday, if he has fully recovered from a blow to the head suffered during a practice match last week.
The 21-year-old was struck on the head while bowling for Australia A against India at the SCG but provided he passes all the necessary concussion tests, he will earn a baggy green in Adelaide.

“If he’s passed fit he’ll definitely play,” Langer told reporters. “We’re just going through the concussion protocols. If Cameron gets through the protocols and he gets through training and he’s feeling good (he will play).
“He had another test this morning that we got good news on. He’s a terrific young bloke and an excellent talent. He’s earned the right for selection.
“Cameron might bowl a few overs but he’s earned the right purely through weight of runs and that’s a great credit to him as a young player.”
Green shot into contention for a Test berth with his stellar early-season Sheffield Shield form, plundering 197 against NSW to go with two half centuries against South Australia and Victoria.
In Australia A’s first three-day match against the Indians at Drummoyne Oval, he showed his class with a sparkling 125 not out.
Green’s seam bowling is another impressive string to his bow but Langer said he will be picked as a batsman, rather than an all-rounder.

Green will likely bat at No. 6 but Australia still has plenty of headaches at the top of the order. David Warner is out injured, Will Pucovski was ruled out with concussion, incumbent opener Joe Burns has barely scored a run all summer and Marcus Harris failed to make a statement in both Australia A games, leaving selectors with tough decisions to make about who will face the new ball.
Langer said Marnus Labuschagne definitely won’t open the batting, having performed so well at No. 3, leaving Matthew Wade as a possible option to jump up the order from No. 6 and partner either Burns or Harris.
“He’s got good footwork, he’s got the game for it, he can counter-attack like David Warner,” Langer said of Wade.
“Like a lot of the great openers do, they don’t just have strong defence but they counter-attack as well. He can definitely do it. We’ve just got to work out what the best make-up of our team is going to be.
“He’s so well regarded. He was the vice-captain for a couple of games when Pat (Cummins) was away in the white-ball team.
“He’s very tough mentally and physically, he’s got a great attitude to the game. He’s an unbelievable team man. He’s a very, very important part of our team.”
The first Test starts in Adelaide on Thursday and will be played under lights with a pink ball as a day-night affair.
