Georgia Redmayne scores century in Queensland Fire’s final win over Victoria

A magnificent unbeaten century from captain Georgia Redmayne has inspired the Queensland Fire to their first Women’s National Cricket League title.

Runners-up five times previously, the Fire finally secured their maiden WNCL crown with a 112-run thrashing of Victoria at Junction Oval on Saturday.

Sent in by the hosts after rain delayed the start of play, the Fire totalled 8/317 from their 50 overs.

Redmayne showed her class, scoring 134 not out from 146 balls.

The innings took her WNCL season run-tally to 531, coming at an average of 132.8.

She was well supported by Mikayla Hinkley (53) and fellow opener Georgia Voll (34) as the Fire set Victoria a tough total to chase.

“For me, (it’s) keeping it simple,” said Redmayne, who captained the Fire in the absence of regular skipper Jess Jonassen, who is away on international duty with Australia in New Zealand.

“I try to lead by example and they’re a very easy group to play with, so I’m really proud of them all.”

The chase proved too much for the home side, who were bowled out for 205 in the 43rd over.

All-rounder Grace Harris was the chief destroyer with the ball, finishing with 4/35 from eight overs, while Courtney Sippel and Lilly Mills chipped in with three wickets each.

Victorian opener Elyse Villani’s bid to set a new WNCL season run-scoring record failed after she was dismissed by Mills for 18.

It left her on 611 runs for the season, 18 short of Zoe Goss’ record of 629 runs, set in the 1996/97 WNCL campaign.

Despite her side’s loss, Villani was named player of the tournament.

“I’m really lucky to take the field with an incredible bunch of humans,” Villani said.

“To represent Victoria is a real honour. The effort can never be questioned from the girls.

“Well done to all the players and the support staff from Queensland.”
