Australia’s chances of regaining the Border-Gavaskar Trophy have taken a massive blow after the hosts were thwarted by a gritty Indian fightback on Sunday afternoon.

Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur combined for a game-changing 123-run partnership for the seventh wicket, their resistance leaving the Australians in dire straits.

Day three started ideally for the Australians, with Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane (37) and the dangerous Cheteshwar Pujara (25) removed in the morning session.

The hosts then snared two quick wickets after the lunch break to leave India in trouble at 6/186.

But Sundar (62) and Thakur (67) refused to give away their wicket throughout the afternoon, the pair surviving 36 overs at the crease.

The Australians became frustrated as outside edges flew threw the slip cordon and top edges evaded the outfielders.

The pace bowlers relentless persisted with the short ball tactic to no avail throughout the afternoon, while spinner Nathan Lyon remains stuck on 397 Test wickets.

Skipper Tim Paine then put down a touch chance in the evening session to rub salt into the wounds.

Meanwhile, the gloveman’s woes with the DRS continued on Sunday, with Paine making two unsuccessful calls.

Sports reporter Mark Gottlieb tweeted: "That’s an absolutely awful review. Total desperation stuff from Australia. Shades of Headingley."

Australia eventually managed to clean up the Indian tail, Josh Hazlewood (5/57) the most damaging bowler with five scalps.

It was the ninth five-wicket haul of Hazlewood’s Test career.

Opening batsmen David Warner (20 not out) and Marcus Harris (one not out) survived a tricky period against the new ball before stumps was called.

Although the Australians would typically be in a winning position, there is rain and thunderstorms predicted for days four and five.

Australia requires nothing less than a victory in the fourth Test, otherwise India will return home with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the grasps.

At stumps, Australia is 0/21 with a lead of 54.
