Beau Webster’s beautiful gesture for Aussie debutant Jake Weatherald

Australian star Beau Webster has every right to feel hard done by after being dropped for the first Ashes Test, but he has shown he is all class.

Classy act for debutante Weatherald

Australian all-rounder Beau Webster would have been forgiven for being down in the dumps on Friday after he was brutally axed ahead of the first Test against England. But he was anything but.

Brendan Doggett and Jake Weatherald were handed their maiden baggy greens on Friday for the Ashes Test in Perth.

As they were presented their caps, Webster looked on and clapped, knowing he would be carrying the water and his impact would be limited to being a substitute fielder.

But he showed his immense class by being one of the first to not only congratulate Weatherald but his entire family, including his parents and partner, who came to watch the 31-year-old’s debut.

That is, despite the fact that the opener effectively took his spot, so Australia could bring in a specialist opener and Marnus Labuschagne could return to his preferred role of No.3.

It was a tough break for the all-rounder who was the star of last summer and hasn’t put a foot wrong in seven Tests.

And even when he was asked earlier this week if Weatherald is ready to make his Test debut, Webster threw his support behind his fellow Australian despite the fact that it hurt his chances of keeping his spot in the Aussie XI.

“He’s been a revelation for us at the top of the order,” Webster said of Weatherald earlier this week.

“We were crying out a little bit for someone who can take the game away early in the innings, and he does that.

“We saw even a couple of knocks this year to go with his exceptional year last year, where he puts the pressure back on the bowlers.

“He bats how you want to as an opening batter in Australia right now. He punishes a bad ball, and he’s really selective when the ball’s around the stumps. He nearly single-handedly got us into a Shield final last year with the way batted.”
