Alyssa Healy tells Indian cricket team to suck it up after hotel quarantine complaints

Alyssa Healy had a blunt message for the Indians after they complained of quarantining in a Brisbane “prison” for the fourth Test.

Alyssa Healy’s message is simple: Suck it up.

The wicketkeeper for the Australian women’s cricket team, and wife of Test fast bowler Mitchell Starc, wasn’t showing India any sympathy as the visitors revealed their unhappiness with conditions at their Brisbane hotel as they undergo quarantine ahead of the fourth and final Test at the Gabba.

Reports emerged on Wednesday the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was forced to step in after the visitors complained about their new digs, an unnamed member of the tourists’ travelling party describing the hotel as a “prison for all practical purposes” in an interview with the Times of India.

“We are locked up in our rooms, have to make our own beds, clean our own toilets. Food is coming from a nearby Indian restaurant which will be given to us on our floor. We can’t move out of the floor that’s been designated to us,” the source said.

Reacting to a report of India’s gripes on Twitter, Healy wrote: “The Aus and NZ women’s teams did their quarantine in the same hotel last year. Here’s a shock — we survived …”

Responding to a commenter who asked if she’d been forced to spend four months away from home before quarantining, Healy stuck to her guns.

“There’s a few Aus players who haven’t been home since July — haven’t heard them whinge yet,” she added.

Healy’s initial tweet caused quite a stir, prompting more than 600 comments — many of them disagreeing with her, as she later acknowledged.

“Love how passionate you all are,” she said.

Healy received support from NSW paceman Trent Copeland, who cheekily tweeted: “I mean seriously, who makes their own bed??” with a laughing emoji.

Former Miss World Erin Holland, a cricket presenter and partner of Sydney Thunder all-rounder Ben Cutting, also joined the fun.

“To be fair, the housework of making one’s bed + vacuuming the carpet actually also gave me something to for 30 mins of the day,” she tweeted.

Healy doubled down on Thursday morning, issuing a reality check to anyone whingeing about the situation.

“G’day everyone. For those of you having a huge whinge (most). Here’s some perspective. We’re in a GLOBAL pandemic. Countries are shut, people are dying and international travel is remarkably hard especially for those trying to come home,” she tweeted.

“The fact that we (yes I play cricket as a woman) are able to travel the world and still do our job whilst many around the globe have lost theirs is a privilege. It’s tough, it’s not easy everyone has to sacrifice things — but it’s still a privilege and a choice we made to keep our sport going.

“Government mandated quarantine isn’t much fun but at least cricketers can get out and train/play for trophies which clearly mean so much. Just have a little perspective people!”

However, respected Indian broadcaster Harsha Bhogle called for some perspective after seeing Healy and Copeland’s online banter.

“Trent, Alyssa, my feeling is that these are quotes picked out of a larger conversation. Everyone is on edge and I think the key is what they were promised versus what they were delivered,” Bhogle tweeted.

“These are stressful times for everyone. Let us all cut each other some slack.”

The hotel swimming pool, gym and cafes were all off-limits to the players when they arrived, according to the source who complained about conditions, but that changed when the BCCI took up the issue with Cricket Australia.

“The board has been told that the team has been given access to all the lifts in the hotel. They can use a gym too. It has been assured that there will be room service and house keeping,” a senior BCCI official told The Times of India.

“The team has also been given a team room where they can assemble and have meetings. Only the swimming pool is not open for use.

“The players are exhausted and have retired to their rooms. But they would like to go out for a stroll later in the day. You can’t expect a player to keep doing up his room during this kind of tour. BCCI is always by the side of its players and will ensure they get the best treatment.”

The series is locked at 1-1 after India’s heroic draw at the SCG. The decider kicks off in Brisbane on Friday.
