MMA fighter thanks his wife and his girlfriend after fight

MMA fighter Benny Madrid has shown the importance of thinking before you speak, with this slip of the tongue landing him in incredibly hot water.

AS a brutal, mentally draining sport, MMA can take its toll on the bodies and minds of its fighters.

The mental toll is such that very occasionally, a fighter will appear to forget where they are or with whom they may be speaking.

Such was the case for World Series of Fighting contender Benny Madrid.

Madrid won his bout with Jeff Fletcher via a rear choke submission on Saturday, and spoke to the ring side announcer following his match. But what he said left onlookers rather stunned.

You heard correctly.

“Thank you everyone who believed in me … my wife and girlfriend,” Madrid said.

When the comment suddenly began to gain traction on social media, Madrid quickly chimed in, saying his slip of the tongue was an honest mistake.

“Lol it’s my girlfriend/fiancé that’s going to be my wife.. Was caught up in the moment,” he wrote on the Sports Illustrated Facebook page.

While that appears quite innocent, this fighter may find himself sleeping on the couch for the foreseeable future.

Last night Benny Madrid thanked his wife and his GF after his #WSOF victory. Today he thanked his friend for letting him sleep on his couch.
