Katie Taylor makes history
Irish boxer Katie Taylor has taken home the WBA lightweight title with a stunning victory over Anahi Sanchez.
A left hook to the body from Taylor skittled Sanchez in the second round, leaving the Argentine off balance to set up a blow to the face. But Sanchez was able to recover, turning the fight into a brawl by the end of the final round.
The fight went the distance but was threatened to be stopped by a savage right hand from Taylor late in the piece, forcing referee Steve Gray to step in and take a look at the damage to Sanchez.
All three judges scored the 99-90 in Taylor’s favour, handing the 31-year-old the title only a year after turning professional.
“This is by far the biggest night of my career,” Taylor said.
Her feat snagged a rare piece of boxing history, becoming the first world lightweight champion since 1897.

British boxer Kal Yafai made a second successful defence of his WBA super-flyweight title with a unanimous decision over mandatory challenger Sho Ishida on Saturday.
The judges scored it 118-110, 116-112 and 116-112 in favour of Yafai, who handed his Japanese opponent the first loss of his career in Cardiff. Yafai moved to 23-0 (14 KOs) and has his sights on lucrative fights in the United States in a division that contains titleholders Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Naoya Inoue, and Jerwin Ancajas.
“I wasn’t too impressed with my performance out there,” said Yafai, who gave up a four-inch (10-centimeter) height advantage to Ishida (24-1). “A bit sluggish but I grinded out the win.” They were fighting on the undercard of the world heavyweight title fight between Anthony Joshua and Carlos Takam.
