NFL stud DK Metcalf blown away in 100m Olympic shot

One of the NFL’s quickest men has been humbled by some of the US’ best sprinters but he did anything but embarrass himself.

NFL star DK Metcalf has put his speed to the test — but the Seattle Seahawks stud has handed himself and other NFL stars a reality check when it comes to pure speed.

While exploits on the football field often make it seem like a switch to the track could end very well, Metcalf finished last in his heat as the guys who do it for a living flexed on the buff star.

Metcalf, who first came to the attention of the football world when his ridiculous pre-Draft picture went viral, has quickly become a key for the Seahawks.

He has since continued to stun the NFL with his absurd pictures.

Early last season, it was clear Metcalf had become Seattle QB Russell Wilson’s main target despite going 64th in the 2019 NFL Draft.

He was on track to break all sorts of records throughout the season but also became a target for opposition teams.

Metcalf’s speed made the news last season when he chased down the Arizona Cardinal’s Budda Baker, making up 10 yards over 90 yards to save a touchdown.

That moment saw the USA Track and Field team invite Metcalf to try his wares against the best sprinters America has to offer.

And Metcalf took them up on it at the Golden Games and Distance Open, which leads into the Olympic Trials.

He did anything but dishonouring himself either, finishing in a time of 10.37 seconds, but it was only good enough for ninth in his 100m heat.

The winner of the event was Cravon Gillespie, who won the final in 9.96.

A time of 10.05 was needed to automatically qualify for the Trials, while the USATF then added the next fastest men until a field of 32 has been selected.

A 10.37 time ranks 84th in the US this year, but Metcalf has also only been training for the event for the past two to three months.

“Excited to have the opportunity,” Metcalf said after the event. “These are world-class athletes. They do this for a living. It’s very different from football speed, which I just realised.

“Of course (qualifying for Trials) was always my goal. I really do think and thought I really had a good chance to qualify.”

Metcalf was not expected to do as well as he did either, with NBC Sports analyst Ato Boldon believing Metcalf could run around 10.6 at his best.

Before the event, USATF managing director Adam Schmenk told Yahoo Sports Metcalf was eager to show his ability on the track.

“DK’s agent told us that he really wants to try to make the Olympics and asked what steps he needs to take,” he said.

“We walked him through what the auto qualifying time was that he would have to run in a sanctioned USATF event and told him that we would help him find a lane if and when he wanted to do this.”
