West Coast captain Darren Glass suspended for one match

UPDATE: WEST Coast skipper Darren Glass will miss Saturday's derby against Fremantle after accepting his one-match ban.

WEST Coast skipper Darren Glass will miss Saturday's derby clash against Fremantle after accepting his one-match ban for a high bump.

The 31-year-old was cited on a rough conduct charge after he felled Brisbane counterpart Jonathan Brown late in the Eagles’ 98-point win at Patersons Stadium.

Glass collided with Brown as the Lions forward led Eric Mackenzie out to the ball, with the airborne Eagles skipper collecting Brown’s head with his shoulder.

The Match Review Panel deemed the hit was reckless, with medium impact and high contact, drawing 325 demerit points. But a five-year good record and an early guilty plea can slash the points total to 182.81 and a one-game ban.

West Coast decided this morning against challenging the ban.

Glass was one of his side’s best players in the Round 9 derby win, controlling proceedings in the back half as the Dockers were held to their lowest-ever Patersons Stadium score of 5.6 (36).

Key defender Mitch Brown and the hard-running Jacob Brennan are most likely to replace the skipper in West Coast’s defence should he miss.

Mackenzie said he was confident the side’s defensive unit could cover the potential loss of the 236-game veteran.

“I like the other blokes coming back to try and help me out, it's just a pity that he just got him high,” Mackenzie said.

“(Glass) is a strong leader down there, so we'll miss him and his ability to nut someone and then help everyone else out.

“He'll be missed, but we've got blokes to come in.”

Rebounding defender Shannon Hurn, who was one of the Eagles’ best against Brisbane with 19 touches and two goals, echoed the sentiment.

“I think our backline is very versatile and very good,” Hurn said.

“We can mix and match blokes pretty well.”

Regardless of whether Glass plays, Mackenzie is likely to get the job on in-form Fremantle skipper Matthew Pavlich, who has proved a handful for opposition sides in the past two months.

Pavlich has booted 36 goals in his past eight games, including hauls of seven (against GWS) and six (against the Western Bulldogs) in his last two starts at Patersons Stadium.

But Fremantle’s all-time goalscoring leader has managed just one major in his past three derby appearances, having spent plenty of time in the midfield before being thrust into a deeper forward role this season.

“He's staying a lot closer to home and he's kicking a lot more goals as a result of that,” Mackenzie said.

“He probably started the year a bit quiet in that role but now he's learnt his forward tricks again.

“I'm looking forward to the challenge.”

In other match review panel findings, Adelaide’s Scott Thompson was cleared of any wrongdoing following a hit on Geelong’s Steve Johnson in the opening seconds of Saturday’s clash.

North Melbourne’s Lindsay Thomas was handed a two-match ban for a rough conduct incident involving Melbourne’s Dan Nicholson, while Neville Jetta can accept a one-match sanction for front-on contact to Thomas.

West Coast’s Scott Selwood can accept an $1800 fine for wrestling Brisbane’s Simon Black.
