Kate Neilson, the former partner of AFL legend Wayne Carey, has asked for the “dark” end of their relationship to be off-limits during the screening of SAS Australia.

The former North Melbourne star will be a contestant on the Channel 7 show, which begins on Monday night.

Carey and his fellow celebrity recruits have signed up for the series which puts celebrities through gruelling physical and emotional tasks.

A promotion teaser earlier this month showed Carey addressing his infamous cheating affair with a teammate’s wife during a segment on the show where he was interrogated by officers.

Now it has been revealed by The Herald Sun, Carey will also address his split from Neilson during his participation on the show.

The Melbourne socialite turned Los Angeles-based actor says she hopes the “dark period” of her life won’t be re-explored in the public eye when aired on Seven.

The former couple were briefly engaged in 2009, but split soon afterwards.

The separation came after Carey spent time in a US jail for assaulting Miami police, who were called after what the footballer claims was an accidental glassing of Neilson in 2007.

She says she remains in contact with her ex and doesn’t want the incident to be aired in public again.

“The incident was so long ago now and it was a dark period of our relationship, but I can say with certainty the glass of wine was intentionally thrown into my face and smashed my mouth pretty bad,” she told The Herald Sun.

“(It is) definitely something I well and truly want to leave behind me.”

Carey will reportedly be confrontedand asked to address a string of scandals that followed his career downwards spiral following his 2002 affair with Kangaroos star Anthony Stevens’ wife Kelli, during his stint on SAS Australia.

He was ultimately forced to leave North Melbourne at the time to finish his career with the Adelaide Crows.

Brent Harvey, the AFL games-record holder who played his entire 20-year career at North Melbourne, said last year the sex scandal ruptured the playing group and crippled the club for years.

In the clip released by Seven this month, SAS instructors label Carey a “trainwreck” and he tells them during an interrogation session: “I slept with a teammate’s wife. It’s haunted me for 20 years.

“My integrity will always be questioned. I’m not trying to prove anything to the public — it’s to myself.

“People can change. They evolve. Hopefully this can help me.”

The clip ends with Carey saying his “worst nightmare” would be standing at the top of a mountain because he has a fear of heights — as footage shows him scaling a daunting cliff face.

Publicly, Stevens stayed silent for years about being betrayed by Carey before finally going on the record with veteran AFL journalist Mike Sheahan in 2015. At the time, Stevens told Fox Footy’s Open Mike Carey had not even apologised to him — something Carey refuted.

Carey spoke in 2016 about how he moved to mend his rift with Stevens ahead of the 20-year reunion for the Kangaroos’ 1996 premiership-winning team. The pair met privately in Melbourne before the big event to sort out their differences.

“As we know, Stevo said on Open Mike a little while ago that he thought that I hadn’t properly apologised so that is where it started,” Carey told Triple M six years ago.

“A heartfelt apology. That’s where it started and that’s where it ended.

“You’ll never forget (the affair) and it’s something that will live with me forever, as I’m sure it will a lot of people, which is still sad and I still live with that, but we can go to the event on Saturday and just have a smile on our faces and laugh and people can feel really good about being there.”

Carey meanwhile, is also at the centre of Channel 7’s footy commentary team shake-up ahead of the 2022 season.

The two-time premiership winner and seven-time All-Australian is set to be moved off Seven’s Friday Night Footy coverage with popular presenter Daisy Pearce moving to Friday nights.

Pearce is set to join Hawthorn premiership captain Luke Hodge on special comments as Brian Taylor and James Brayshaw call the game. Carey had been a fixture on Friday nights since 2014.
