‘Unrecruitable’: Jordan De Goey nowhere to be seen after controversial Bali trip

Jordan De Goey was missing from Collingwood today as he was labelled “unrecruitable” following his controversial trip to Bali.

Jordan De Goey was absent from Collingwood’s headquarters on Monday as he was labelled “unrecruitable” following his trip to Bali during the club’s bye week.

The Magpies star is at the centre of another off-field scandal after he was seen tugging at a woman’s top in a video posted to Instagram.

Video footage of the 26-year-old partying in Bali spread across the internet and has put him well and truly on the hot seat with AFL legends and pundits blasting the star’s mid-season antics.

On Saturday the woman in the videos, Remy Jackson, spoke out about the backlash and threw her support behind De Goey.

On the weekend De Goey posted a statement to Instagram slamming media outlets for “the relentless pursuit and persecution of athletes”.

Now the Herald Sun reports he was unsighted at Collingwood this morning and is expected to miss this afternoon’s training session.

De Goey isn’t expected back at the club until Wednesday following his controversial mid-season trip to Bali. The Magpies play the Giants on Sunday in their round 15 clash.

The midfielder is out of contract at the end of this season and pundits believe De Goey is now “unrecruitable” and clubs will have little appetite to trade for him given his recent indiscretions.

Respected AFL broadcaster Gerard Whateley criticised De Goey’s “woe-is-me” attitude and said other clubs were surprised Collingwood hadn’t suspended him.

“Only Collingwood knows the parameters it put in place around De Goey’s behaviour at the start of the year and what behaviour, particularly when it comes to his conduct toward women, would constitute further sanction,” Whateley wrote on SEN’s website.

“He was offered a clean slate and he has squandered it.

“Having spoken with the leaders of other clubs across the weekend, to a person they were resolute they would suspend De Goey.

“Idiotic doesn’t even scratch the surface was the sentiment from more than one current day player.

“Among the questions facing De Goey is how serious is he about his professional football career and the sacrifices that are required?

“The answer to that question will have a major say in his future. I think he is unrecruitable now.

“No club with a straight face could explain to its senior players why you’d be offering a million dollar deal to lure De Goey.

“He’s Collingwood’s asset, he’s Collingwood’s problem and he’s Collingwood’s responsibility.”

AFL commentators agreed De Goey’s trade value has plummeted after his latest off field scandal.

“It certainly puts more seeds of doubt in other clubs that were considering having a crack at him as a free agent and trying to get him to the football club,” Leigh Montagna said on Fox Footy’s First Crack.

“If there was already some concerns whether it’s at board level or club level discussing do we or don’t we, what are the risks versus rewards — this just adds another layer to it. It might put a few clubs off.

“We know he’s a matchwinner, we know he’s got high-level talent, he is a gun player in the competition, I do think that, but now maybe some clubs might think the risk is not worth the reward.”

Four-time premiership player Jordan Lewis added: “We’ve seen so many examples over the last five to 10 years when the game has become more system-based than individuals starring,” he said.

“There’s so many examples to say that one player cannot win you a premiership or change the way you go about it, but it can certainly impact the group. I think in this case the bargaining power is getting less and less.

“If I’m another club, if I’m a player at another club and involved in the leadership group and key decision makers, I don’t think I’d be looking at the Jordan De Goey situation.

“I think other clubs would be looking past the football side. You want to get people in – and I don’t know him admittedly – you want to get people in to build culture and understand that that’s the most important thing that leads to performance, and that’s the one question mark over him.”
