Majak Daw’s AFL career lives on after he officially became a Demon on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old was cut loose by North Melbourne at the end of last season and it looked like his time at the top level might be over.

He started the New Year on a brighter note, signing with North Heidelberg to play in the Northern Football League in Victoria alongside his younger brother and Kangaroos legend Brent Harvey.

Daw then received a lifeline from Melbourne last month when he was offered the chance to train with the team and possibly force his way into the senior squad. The former Roos star impressed the right judges and earnt his spot on the rookie list of the AFL club just weeks before the season gets underway.

Coach Simon Goodwin told Daw the good news on Tuesday morning, the versatile player hoping to plug holes left by key forwards Ben Brown and Sam Weideman, who will both miss the start of the season with injuries.

“We invited Majak to train following injuries to Ben Brown and Sam Weideman,” Demons list manager Tim Lamb told Melbourne Media.

“Since he joined us, Majak has done everything we have asked of him and shown terrific commitment to the program.

“He is progressing really well and we think he could play a valuable role for us during the season.”

Daw was brought into the AFL with pick No. 9 at the 2009 Rookie Draft, and played 54 games for the Kangaroos before being delisted at the end of a horror 2020, in which the club finished second bottom, just above Adelaide.

He suffered another blow on a personal front as his relationship with Emily McKay, the mother of his son, ended.

Daw was hospitalised in December 2018 after he fell from the Bolte Bridge in Melbourne — breaking his hips and pelvis during the incident.

The 29-year-old’s comeback was delayed further after he tore a pectoral muscle during a gym session last May. But Daw finally made his highly-anticipated return to the AFL in August, facing the Crows at Marvel Stadium in round nine.

Daw marked the fairytale moment with a goal in the fourth quarter, which was a highlight of the 2020 premiership.

It looked like that’s where the AFL fairytale would end after Daw was axed by the Roos but Melbourne has shown faith to give him another shot.

The Demons also added Deakyn Smith to their rookie list after impressing as he progressed through the club’s academy program.
