‘In real trouble’: Collingwood fuming as Nathan Buckley sets De Goey straight

The severity of his behaviour is reportedly finally dawning on Jordan De Goey as Collingwood figures fume and Nathan Buckley weighed in.

Collingwood suspend Jordan De Goey over Bali incident

Jordan De Goey’s former coach Nathan Buckley says the Collingwood star should accept whatever offer the Magpies put in front of him as new reports emerged about how the AFL club is viewing the star forward’s conduct in Bali.

De Goey has a history of off-field indiscretions and has been heavily criticised as footage emerged of his interaction with a female after he decided to jet overseas for a break during the bye round.

Collingwood has repeatedly stood by the 26-year-old and Buckley said he should repay the Pies’ faith, even if it means forsaking extra money.

Buckley’s advice comes amid reports Collingwood pulled a deal worth $3.2 million off the table following the Bali scandal, leading to speculation other clubs could pursue De Goey.

“Collingwood should not pay top dollar for Jordan De Goey,” Buckley told SEN’s Whateley.

“I think they should offer him what they’re prepared to pay him and that he should just accept that and say, ‘Thank you for your support, for your guidance and understanding as I try and navigate my life to go from being a young man who has made some blues to being a better contributor and better person’.

“I still think that if the club chooses to continue with him, I think that should be their parameters that they continue with him on. I think Jordy should be pretty thankful if that occurs.

“He’s still a young guy but he’s got to make better decisions and he’s got to decide to put people around him that are going to help him make better decisions.

“I’m really uncomfortable right now, I have to declare that, because I think in isolation what Jordy did is not a hanging offence. But when you put it against his past, when you put it against the situation that the club was in, in a really positive space, to make the decision to go to Bali, at the time it should have had red flags all over it.

“In retrospect it clearly was a bad decision.”

Collingwood has yet to comment publicly on the incident but De Goey himself issued a statement blaming the media for the storm that has erupted over his situation. He took aim at media outlets for “the relentless pursuit and persecution of athletes” to “create an uneducated, bias and ill-informed narrative that has gone too far”.

The woman alongside De Goey in the video, Remy Jackson, also spoke out in defence of the AFL star on social media on the weekend.

“Hey everyone, I can’t believe the backlash towards Jordy and myself over here in Bali … nothing to see here,” Jackson posted on her Instagram story.

‘In real trouble’: Penny drops as Collingwood’s true feelings revealed

Veteran journalist Caroline Wilson reported on Footy Classified on Monday night there has been a shift in Collingwood’s stance towards De Goey and his Bali trip, suggesting a suspension is becoming increasingly likely.

“Things have changed at that football club in recent days and the personnel at that football club,” Wilson said. “You’ve got Nadine Rabah from the AFL who has joined Collingwood today as a senior corporate and media executive, with very strong on these things I’m told.

“(Director) Christine Holgate who’s led as a champion of change at the club and tried to transform them. AFLW players like (captain) Steph Chiocci who’s been very strong in this space.

“I think the demeaning of women in the (Bali) video, that’s what’s really upset the club — upset Craig McRae, upset (football boss) Graham Wright, upset (CEO) Mark Anderson. I think they’re a lot angrier than earlier media reports suggested because younger media reps at the club were just getting it wrong on Friday and Saturday.

“I’m told by the club the penny has dropped now for Jordan De Goey, he realises he’s in real trouble.

“The attitude towards women will be reflected in the punishment. I do think now suspension is very possible … it sounds like there are a lot of stakeholders in this.

“I was unaware too of the depth of disappointment in that video from both Collingwood and the AFL. They think it’s tarnished Collingwood’s image and also the AFL.”

Wilson added there’s a “very good chance” De Goey won’t be at Collingwood next season.

De Goey wasn’t sighted at Collingwood training on Monday and Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd questioned why the Pies star didn’t come home immediately when the video became public.

“What I find staggering … why wouldn’t he have come home?” Lloyd said on Footy Classified. “Would they have got him on the plane straight away and said come home? How do you when you’re training on a Monday morning get in on Sunday night?

“Now he’s missed training and we go into Tuesday when it’s going to be another circus. What a massive distraction this is.

“The respect he’s lost from coaches and teammates is there. Imagine if they lose on Sunday too?”
