Footy Show star Kane Cornes has been forced into a humiliating apology on live TV after revealing his text message to Eddie McGuire.

Aussie footy fans almost seem to love nothing more than making a pundit eat humble pie.

It’s a lesson former Port Adelaide 300-gamer Kane Cornes learned the hard way after Collingwood and social media piled on following a stunning one-point win over the West Coast Eagles in an elimination final in Perth.

On Channel 9’s AFL Sunday Footy Show during the bye week, Cornes gave the Magpies no hope of getting through to a semi-final saying “Collingwood are going to make up the numbers in this one, they’re not winning this game” in a bold prediction.

The rest of the panel were left stunned and tried to convince Cornes he was wrong to underestimate the eighth-ranked Magpies.

“Are you seriously … hang on … let‘s just get this right – Collingwood is there to make up the numbers?” host Tony Jones clarified.

“Unfortunately for them [yes],” Cornes said.

“Just the travel, the quarantine, West Coast, the record in Perth is too much for them to overcome

“As much as I‘ve admired what the Pies have done this year, they’re not winning this game.”

Jones called it “the silliest thing you’ve said all year”.

Guess Cornes didn’t quite get that one right.

And the Magpies didn’t forget it either.

After a rollercoaster game in which the lead swapped eight times, the Magpies made it through to a semi-final showdown against Geelong after securing a 12.4 (76) to 11.9 (75) win over the Eagles.

It forced Cornes to eat humble pie on Sunday morning when his bold declaration was one of the first topics discussed on The Sunday Footy Show.

Cornes first apologised, but then labelled the Collingwood Football Club “cocky” for the way fans and club personalities came for him at full time.

“No, I didn’t learn. First thing, they were great. I apologise to them,” he said.

“What a performance it was and they’re a great footy club. But geez they’re cocky. Settle down you haven’t won the premiership yet. Eddie (McGuire) is texting me, Jeremy Howe is tweeting me, the football club is tweeting me. Relax there’s three games to go before you win it.

“Settle down. I got it wrong, but stop celebrating like you have won the premiership. There’s still a long way to go in this season.”

Footy Show host Tony Jones then revealed a group text message exchange between himself, Cornes and Magpies president Eddie McGuire in which he suggested Cornes was much more humble in his apology to the football club.

“No, I just said, ‘Congratulations Eddie, I’m an idiot, enjoy it’. That’s live TV,” Cornes claimed.

The Magpies’ social media team also had a response to Cornes ready to go, they pulled it down shortly after but not before Brisbane’s Charlie Cameron responded with “oops” and users were able to nab screenshots.

But social media was not about to let Cornes forget his prediction.

His name was one of the trending topics on Twitter with the man himself taking to the platform.

“I’m sure the boys will let me off tomorrow morning. Well played @CollingwoodFC what a brilliant football club #sorry #AFLFinals”.

But before he faces his colleagues, social media was on the case.

Injured Magpies star Jeremy Howe hit straight back saying “Try that on for size Kane” tagging in the video from last week’s Sunday AFL Footy Show.

Gogglebox’s Anastasia and Faye tweeted: “@kanecornes well I’m not letting you off. Watch what you say next time. Maybe you’re on tv to make up the numbers. . Axxx”.

There were plenty of other Pies fans firing back at the former AFL star as well.
