Dane Swan savagely mocks AFL star’s outfit as part of Brownlow Twitter spree

Former AFL star Dane Swan was the real king on Brownlow night, ripping Patrick Dangerfield as part of a cold-blooded Twitter spree.

Beige suits were back on Brownlow Medal night — but not everybody was a fan.

Western Bulldogs star Tom Liberatore, Melbourne’s Jack Viney and Geelong’s Patrick Dangerfield went for a lighter look at the AFL’s awards ceremony on Sunday evening, which went a little differently as players gathered in multiple locations across the country for a virtual presentation because of COVID-19.

As expected, Brisbane midfielder Lachie Neale won the top prize for an outstanding season that saw him lead the Lions to the preliminary final before they were beaten by Geelong on Saturday night.

But while Neale accepted his award is unusual circumstances, some things remained the same. As he’s done in previous years, former Collingwood star Dane Swan took over Sportsbet’s Twitter account to provide lighthearted running commentary of the night and nobody was safe.

Dangerfield — or more specifically, his dress sense — was firmly in the ex-Magpie’s sights. Rocking an open neck shirt, loafers and three-piece suit, Swan thought Dangerfield looked like he was going to umpire a cricket match or work with animals.

“Danger is either going to field 80 overs at square leg or he’s about to tame a few lions at the circus. What the hell is that outfit,” Swan wrote.

It’s called farshun.

It only got better from there. From complaining about not being invited — “You’ve given out 600 zoom squares to the broadcast and I couldn’t cop one?” — to the quality of the coverage — “How ironic you can’t watch the first ever online Brownlow, online” — Swan was in fine form.

Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney couldn’t escape a clip from Swan, who referenced the pair’s lengthy handshake after he won the Brownlow in 2011.

“Just a heads up. It’s been nine years but I can confirm Bruce has finally let go of my hand,” Swan wrote.

The Demons also copped a drive-by after missing the finals in 2020.

“They’re trying to hide it, but if you look closely at the Melbourne lads, you’ll see they’re actually chained to their tables,” Swan tweeted.

Swan doesn’t rate Melbourne star Clayton Oliver as much of a looker, suggesting he’s better off covering up as much of his face as possible.

“Clayton Oliver with a mask on is the best he’s ever looked at a Brownlow,” Swan tweeted.

Clayton Oliver was taking no chances.

He didn’t scrub up too badly last year, did he?

The last-placed Crows had the year from hell and Swan reckoned they were still feeling the pain well after their season ended.

Speed has never been a priority on Brownlow night as Swan urged the AFL to get on with revealing the votes.

“These last 6 rounds are dragging out longer than Melbourne’s lockdown,” he wrote.

We finally got to the end where, as everyone expected, Neale was crowned king of the league, finishing a whopping 10 votes clear of Port Adelaide’s Travis Boak in second.
