Collingwood sink to ugly 60-year low in first half against Geelong

Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Collingwood as they equalled a record they never wanted to emulate in Brisbane.

Hello darkness my old friend.
Hello darkness my old friend.

There’s ugly and then there’s what Collingwood produced in the first half of their semi-final contest against Geelong.

After pulling off a stunning upset against West Coast last weekend, the Pies did their best imitation of training cones as the Cats ran riot.

Geelong were making it look easy as the Pies capitulated and fell behind 9.6 (60) to 1.0 (6).

A nine goal to one first half left fans checking the TV guide to see what movies were around as the Pies players trudged off the Gabba into the rooms at the main break.

The demolition job from the Cats saw the Pies equal one of the ugliest records in the club’s history.

Not since way back in the 1960 Grand Final have Collingwood entered halftime with only one scoring shot.

AFL Finals live scores: Geelong vs Collingwood

Collingwood players across the board were left look all at sea as Geelong picked them apart all over the field.

Cats star Patrick Dangerfield led the first half charge, racking up 12 disposals, two goals and six score involvements.

His goalkicking efforts left fans watching on in awe as he produced back-to-back stunners from the boundary line.

Things only began to look a little better for the Pies in the final quarter when they finally managed to five goals and surpass their lowest every finals score.

Despite the Pies finally finding the goals, Geelong outdid them as they slotted six goals in the final quarter to claim the 15.10 (100) to 5.2 (32) win.

It sets up a mouth-watering contest preliminary final next Saturday against the Brisbane Lions. Port Adelaide and Richmond will square off on Friday night.
