AFL Trade Period Day 5: Swans’ deal rejected for a secont time
As the end of the first week of the AFL Trade Period nears, Sydney and Adelaide are running out of time to get a big deal done.
Welcome to our live coverage of Day 5 of the AFL Trade Period.
It has been a quieter day, with Richmond and North Melbourne trading Callum Coleman-Jones and Robbie Tarrant as well as several draft picks the only major move.
Hawthorn is continuing to gauge any interest for its gun midfielers Tom Mitchell and Jaegar O’Meara.

Adelaide to reject Swans’ latest offer for Dawson
Adelaide will reportedly reject Sydney’s second offer to trade Jordan Dawson.
The Crows has been offered a deal that would see them receive the 24-year-old as well as the Swans’ future first and second round picks.
Sydney would get Melbourne’s future first round pick recently acquired by Adelaide, as well as the Crows’ future first and second-round selections.
The Swans were believed to be keen on the swap, but 7News Adelaide’s Theo Doropoulos reported it won’t be going ahead.
Neither will a deal that would have seen Dawson and pick 12 swapped for pick 4.
Richmond and North Melbourne deal done
Richmond has traded tall forward Callum Coleman-Jones, pick 42, 47 and a future fourth round pick to North Melbourne in exchange for Robbie Tarrant, pick 40 and a future second round pick.
Coleman-Jones will boost the Kangaroos’ stocks up forward, while key defender Tarrant will fill the hole left by the retirements of Tigers David Astbury and Bachar Houli.
Port Adelaide interested in gun Hawks midfielder
As Hawthorn shops arounds its stars, Port Adelaide reportedly has expressed some preliminary interest in Hawks midfielder Jaeger O’Meara.
According to the Herald Sun, the Power is yet to approach the 27-year-old but he could emerge as a player of interest next week.
Port Adelaide is hoping to facilitate a trade that would see ruck-forward Peter Ladhams go to the Sydney Swans, before pursuing a deal with O’Meara.
The Power reportedly is more interested in the explosive O’Meara than his Hawks teammate Tom Mitchell, who plays a very similar game style to Port’s Brownlow medallist Ollie Wines.
Port Adelaide has sufficient space in its salary cap and potentially early draft picks to contemplate acquiring O’Meara, but discussions are still in the very early stages.
Desperate coach hawking Hawthorn stars
New Hawks coach Sam Mitchell is reportedly personally ringing rival clubs to attract interest in some of his team’s biggest stars.
The development comes after rumours the club is ready to negotiate a deal for any player on its list over the age of 26 in order to acquire a first round draft pick.
Kane Cornes first claimed on AFL Trade Radio the Hawks are even willing to put Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara, Chad Wingard and Jack Gunston on the trade table.
It followed an eyebrow-raising open letter Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett sent the club’s members warning for fans to be prepared for a “surprise” move this trade period.
The club is entering a new era under Mitchell and are looking to rebuild its list with young talent.
Friday’s report from SEN journalist Sam Edmund showed just how serious the Hawks are in letting the club’s biggest names leave — at the right price.
Edmund reported the Hawks have been coming up empty.
“Hawthorn’s desperation to trade one of its stars for a top draft pick extends to coach Sam Mitchell ringing rival clubs himself in a bid to spark interest,” Edmund wrote on Twitter.
“Hawks getting increasingly desperate given there is so far no takers for the likes of Mitchell, O’Meara and Wingard.”
Fremantle star isn’t wanted by the Dockers
The negotiations between GWS and Fremantle surrounding ruckman Rory Lobb appear no closer to being sorted, despite a report emerging on Friday morning the Dockers don’t want to retain their star tall.
Widespread reports this week revealed Lobb has expressed interest in returning to GWS — the club where he started his career.
But the 29-year-old still has two years left on his contract at the Dockers, which is believed to be worth around $700,000.
The Dockers on Thursday night made a public declaration through football boss Peter Bell that the club wants Lobb to stay.
However, SEN reporter Sam Edmund said Friday morning the Dockers want Lobb to move on.
“Yesterday this move was absolutely on,” Edmund said on SEN Breakfast.
“He doesn’t want to stay at Fremantle, they don’t want him to stay.
“Peter Bell threw a curveball in last night, as did Lobb’s manager Colin Young when they both said the offer will not get it done.”
The comments from Bell have been interpreted by some to be a message the club won’t accept whatever the Giants are offering in exchange for letting Lobb break his contract.
Young’s public comment reportedly surrounds his desire to push for the Giants to extend their contract offer to a four-year deal worth around $2 million.
Lobb has reportedly already completed a medical for GWS, where he played 79 games between 2014 and 2018.
Edmund had earlier said the Giants may not be the only team interested in Lobb.
“Rory Lobb to GWS is absolutely on,” Edmund tweeted.
“Lobb has been wanting out & Melb based clubs were told he’d take less than 700k he’s on now.
“The GWS call came earlier this week & Dockers (were) told today.
“Lobb’s done a medical & clubs to talk trades tomorrow. Unclear whether GWS players involved.”
Brisbane midfielder Lachie Neale was linked with a move back to the Perth club before was linked before he quashed talk of a trade.
Hawks star makes move to Dogs
Hawthorn star Tim O’Brien has joined the Western Bulldogs in a direct replacement for Lewis Young.
According to widespread reports, O’Brien has made his move to the grand finalists as an unrestricted free agent.
It follows the Bulldogs’ earlier move of letting Young join Carlton in exchange for the No. 52 draft pick. O’Brien is expected to make a move to playing as a defender.
The AFL is yet to announce the compensation Hawthorn will receive for seeing O’Brien leave
West Coast ‘skinned’ Carlton in confirmed trade
Carlton has traded Sam Petrevski-Seton to West Coast for the No. 52 draft pick.
In a deal that ropes in the Western Bulldogs, the Blues have moved the No. 52 pick to the Western Bulldogs in a trade for Lewis Young.
Channel 7’s Perth sports presenter Adrian Barich posted on Twitter the Eagles had “skinned” the Blues by getting Petrevski-Seton so cheaply.
Adam Cerra deal completed, Blues pay steep price
Adam Cerra is celebrating his 22nd birthday in a Carlton jumper after the trade paperwork for a deal with Fremantle was officially lodged with the AFL on Thursday.
The stalemate between Carlton and Fremantle has been the biggest saga of the trade period so far and it is ending just as dramatically as it started.
The deal will see Carlton hand over its No. 6 draft pick as well as a future third round pick.
It was seen as a win for the Blues that Fremantle caved on negotiations surrounding a future second round pick and ultimately accepted the third round selection.
However, the details of the trade show just how much Carlton is giving up to sign the rising star.
As first reported by Fox Footy’s Max Laughton, the draft picks handed over by Carlton is the equivalent of the overall No. 4 pick, as measured by the AFL Draft Value Index — less than the haul of draft picks Geelong sent to GWS in its high-stakes deal surrounding star forward Jeremy Cameron.
Fremantle had earlier taken Cerra as the No. 5 overall draft pick.
Cerra has reportedly signed a four-year deal worth around $2.8 million.
The stalemate in the Carlton-Fremantle’s trade negotiations was unlocked earlier on Thursday when the Gold Coast Suns cut a deal with the Dockers which includes sending its No. 19 draft pick to Fremantle
Carlton hand over its prized No. 6 draft selection and its future second round pick.
Gold Coast cuts deal that ‘blows the roof off AFL Trade Period’
The Gold Coast Suns triggered the biggest moment of the AFL Trade Period in a play that unlocked Adam Cerra’s move to Carlton.
The Suns and Dockers reached an agreement that will see Gold Coast’s No. 19 draft pick and Will Brodie move to Fremantle in exchange for the Dockers’ future second round and fourth round draft selections.
SEN’s Sam Edmund on Thursday reported the deal had massive ramifications.
“Gold Coast are about to blow the roof off the trade period with a deal that has been agreed with Fremantle,” Edmund said on SEN Breakfast with Garry and Tim.
“It’s not just the trade itself, but what flows off the back of it. They will send Pick 19 and Will Brodie over for a future second and fourth.
“So, pick 19 will now be used to unlock the deal for Jordan Clark — at least, that’s Fremantle’s thinking — and by extension, that unlocks the deal for Adam Cerra,” he said
