Welcome to our live coverage of Day 8 of the AFL Trade Period.

Hawthorn continues to be the subject of intrigue heading into the second week of trading following the bombshell move to put stars, including Tom Mitchell, Jaeger O’Meara and Jack Gunston, on the trade table.

There is still a long way to go for several clubs engaged in stalemate negotiations with rivals.

The biggest deal so far remains the huge price Carlton paid to secure former Fremantle rising star Adam Cerra last week.

Awkward backflip for unwanted Dockers star

Dockers ruckman Rory Lobb wanted to return to the GWS Giants but his manager has revealed that the trade wouldn’t get off the ground.

It comes after the Dockers reportedly didn’t want Lobb to stay coming out on Friday with for the former Giant looking to return to Western Sydney.

But the 29-year-old still has two years left on his contract at the Dockers.

The Dockers on Thursday night made a public declaration through football boss Peter Bell that the club wants Lobb to stay.

However, SEN reporter Sam Edmund said Friday morning the Dockers want Lobb to move on.

“Yesterday this move was absolutely on,” Edmund said on SEN Breakfast.

“He doesn’t want to stay at Fremantle, they don’t want him to stay.”

The comments from Bell have been interpreted by some to be a message the club won’t accept whatever the Giants are offering in exchange for letting Lobb break his contract.

But while the angling to move Lobb back to Western Sydney didn’t appear to be getting anywhere, Lobb’s manager Colin Young told AFL Media the deal was off.

“We exhausted all avenues to try and assist GWS facilitate this trade in which we believe all parties would benefit in the long run,“ Young said.

“I advised all parties at 7.30pm Sunday evening by email that this trade would not get off the ground so we should all move on.”

Lobb would have had to take a pay cut to return to the Giants, which he was reportedly ready to do.

On Fox Footy’s Trading Day, Tom Morris said he believed it was pushed by the player and his manager and there was not really willingness from the teams.

But David King asked: “How did Lobb get $700,000 a year from Fremantle for any given year, let alone a four to five year period?”

King added that he “has hardly commanded half that money”.

Jon Ralph called him “the luckiest player in the competition” as he “got paid on potential”.

Leigh Montagna said that he believed GWS thought they were in the premiership window, having signed big name players like Toby Greene and Stephen Coniglio, while going after the likes of Lobb and Hawks star Chad Wingard.

Pick 31 not enough for Port young gun

Port Adelaide ruckman Peter Ladhams has officially declared he wants to go to the Sydnney Swans but his club are standing in the way.

Ladhams has made intentions to go to the club official after he was linked to both the Swans and the Hawks.

But AFL.com.au confirmed the Swans were the preferred location for the 23-year-old.

Ladhams has been on the Port books for five years but debuted in 2019 before playing 17 games in 2021 mainly in the forward line.

The Swans have said they would be willing to pick up the final year of Ladhams’ back-ended contract, which is believed to be worth $400,000.

The sticking point for the 202cm ruck to move to Sydney appears to be what Port will get back, with Sydney in possession of picks No.12, 31, 39, 70 and 88, but Port want a pick in the mid-teens to make a deal.

The Swans will also have whatever compensation for a Jordan Dawson move to the Crows assuming the deal gets done.

The Swans sought Ladhams’ last year when Aliir Aliir move to Port but the Power didn’t want to trade the youngster.

Deals fall as Collingwood gets it done for Lipinksi

The negotiations between the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood over Patrick Lipinski are over with the Dogs agreeing to let him go.

The AFL has confirmed the paperwork has been lodged in a deal where the Magpies will give up pick No. 43 in exchange.

Meanwhile, former Crows player Tyson Stengle has signed with Geelong on a two-year deal.

Stengle was de-listed by the Crows for his off-field behaviour, but The Herald Sun now reports he has reached a deal to extend his career with the Cats. Stengle’s move comes after Geelong announced Eddie Betts had joined the club as a development coach last week.

Giants star criticised over late trade ‘mystery’

Giants star Bobby Hill reportedly caught the Giants by surprise when telling the club late that he wanted to be traded.

The talented 21-year-old officially requested a trade to Essendon on Friday — leaving the Giants scrambling for a potential replacement in Hawthorn’s Chad Wingard. The Herald Sun reported Hill first talked with the Bombers last month — just weeks after reportedly discussing an extension with the Giants through to the end of the 2024 season.

Hill remains contracted at the Giants through to the end of 2022.

Essendon is reportedly prepared to put a four-year contract on the table for Hill if the Giants agree to let him go, according to foxsports.com.au.

Footy pundit Kane Cornes on AFL Trade Radio criticised Hill for putting the Giants in such a situation.

“You can’t go and give them one club to deal with, with three days left of the trade period,” he said.

“If Bobby Hill wants to go to Victoria, you have to open it up to 10 clubs. I’m really strong (on this).

“If I’m the Giants, there’s no way I’m trading. I’m looking at Essendon, if that’s his preferred home, and (picks) 11 and 51 aren’t going to get it done.”

SEN’s Sam Edmund said it is a “great mystery” of how the Bombers hope to pull off the deal.

“And it has come oh so late for the Giants as well,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“So I can’t imagine this is going to be the most harmonious of moves from Bobby Hill if he is to force it through.”

Wingard trade reportedly falls apart

Chad Wingard will reportedly be staying at Hawthorn after showing no interest in moving to the Giants.

GWS last week expressed interest in the Hawks star as cover for the potential loss of small forward Bobby Hill, as first reported by The Herald Sun.

Hill is in a stand-off with the Giants after he last week officially requested to be traded to Essendon.

Wingard emerged as an ideal replacement.

However, The Age reported Monday Wingard has knocked the deal on its head.

He has one year to go on his contract and SEN journalist Sam Edmund said on Monday the Hawks would have to continue to pay some of Wingard’s wages if the trade eventuated with the Giants.

Hawthorn trade story flipped on its head

Hawthorn was being portrayed publicly last week as a “desperate” club doing anything and everything to secure top-end draft picks as part of the list re-build under new coach Sam Mitchell.

Mitchell was even reported to have called rival clubs himself to attract interest in trades for his senior players.

However, a new report on Monday showed the Hawks may have more bargaining power than first thought with the club’s salary cap position not impacting their trade moves in any way.

Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary posted on Twitter Monday the Hawks are anything but the basket-case Collingwood was 12 months ago when the Magpies were forced into a fire sale that saw Adam Treloar and Jaidyn Stephenson leave.

“No doubt Hawthorn is open to offloading a star player. But only at the right price,” he wrote.

“O’Meara/Gunston/T.Mitchell/Wingard are contracted and the Hawks have ample salary cap room so they don’t need to jump at any offer.

It emerged on Friday O’Meara was a target for Port Adelaide.

According to the Herald Sun, the 27-year-old was emerging as a person of interest for the Power, despite the club yet to contact him.

Port Adelaide is hoping to facilitate a trade that would see ruck-forward Peter Ladhams go to the Sydney Swans, before pursuing a deal with O’Meara.

Port Adelaide has sufficient space in its salary cap and potentially early draft picks to contemplate acquiring O’Meara.

Kangaroos confirm offers received on No. 1 pick

North Melbourne football boss Brady Rawlings has confirmed Adelaide has attempted to snare the No. 1 overall pick with an offer reported to include three first round picks.

Reports last week indicated Adelaide had offered its No. 4 overall pick, it’s future first round pick and the future first round pick it will receive from Melbourne.

Rawlings on Monday said it was unlikely any team had a draft hand that could force the club to entertain parting with the top pick.

SEN reporter Sam Edmund said on Monday the Kangaroos view the 2021 draft landscape having a significant drop-off from the top three picks to the rest of the crop.

The club has already spoken to expected No. 1 pick Jason Horne-Francis.

“Obviously when you’ve got pick one and obviously this year has got a couple of guys up the top end that are of extreme talent, clubs are going to come for them,” Rawlings told SEN’s Whateley.

“There’s been a few offers for that pick. Once you get to this point of the year you can attribute the pick to a player now, so it becomes even more valuable.

“We listen to every offer that comes our way, but it’s going to take a lot of currency to get this one.”

Adelaide to reject Swans’ latest offer for Dawson

Adelaide will reportedly reject Sydney’s second offer to trade Jordan Dawson.

The Crows has been offered a deal that would see them receive the 24-year-old as well as the Swans’ future first and second round picks.

Sydney would get Melbourne’s future first round pick recently acquired by Adelaide, as well as the Crows’ future first and second-round selections.

The Swans were believed to be keen on the swap, but 7News Adelaide’s Theo Doropoulos reported it won’t be going ahead.

Neither will a deal that would have seen Dawson and pick 12 swapped for pick 4.
